    Abstract: A distributed antenna system includes a host unit configured to receive downlink wireless network information from a radio access network interface and at least one antenna unit communicatively coupled to the host unit by at least one digital communication link. Host unit is configured to convert downlink wireless network information received from radio access network interface from first protocol layer to second protocol layer. Second protocol layer uses relevant bits more efficiently than first protocol layer. Host unit is configured to communicate downlink wireless network information to at least one antenna unit across at least one digital communication link. At least one antenna unit is configured to convert downlink wireless network information communicated from host unit from second protocol layer to downlink radio frequency signals. At least one antenna unit is configured to communicate downlink radio frequency signals wirelessly using at least one antenna.

    Abstract: An antenna unit includes a first physical layer processor configured to receive a first downlink physical layer signal from an upstream device and to convert first downlink physical layer signal into first downlink higher layer data units; a higher layer processor configured to convert first downlink higher layer data units into second downlink higher layer data units; a second physical layer processor configured to generate a second downlink physical layer signal from second downlink higher layer data units; and a radio frequency conversion module configured to convert second downlink physical layer signal into radio frequency signals for communication using an antenna. Communication between upstream device and antenna unit using first downlink physical layer signal having first downlink higher layer data units has a lower data rate than would communication between upstream device and antenna unit using second downlink physical layer signal having second downlink higher layer data units.

    Abstract: A distributed base station radio system includes first channelized to broadband conversion unit that receives first downlink channelized data for first radio frequency band from first channelized radio frequency source; and first universal remote radio head communicatively coupled to first channelized to broadband conversion unit. First channelized to broadband conversion unit converts first downlink channelized data into a first downlink broadband signal. First channelized to broadband conversion unit communicates the first downlink broadband signal to first universal remote radio head. First universal remote radio head receives first downlink broadband signal. First universal remote radio head frequency converts the first downlink broadband signal into first downlink radio frequency signals in first radio frequency band. First universal remote radio head is further configured to transmit first downlink radio frequency signals in first radio frequency band to first subscriber unit.
