A gate roller pair is adapted to nip the recording medium therebetween at a nipping position and to convey the nipped recording medium toward the secondary transfer position. A cleaning blade is retractably brought into contact with the intermediate transfer roller to scrape off toner remaining on the intermediate transfer roller. A conveyance speed of the recording medium at the nipping position is faster than that at the secondary transfer position. The cleaning blade is retracted from the intermediate transfer member until when a trailing end of the recording medium passes through the nipping position, in a case where the recording medium has a stiffness greater than a prescribed level.

Prior to execution of a printing operation, a print preparatory operation is conducted collectively on all developer cartridges mounted to a developing unit, thereby bringing all the developer cartridges into a printable state. Therefore, even if a residual amount of toner in the cartridge runs too low to continue the printing operation performed using one of plural cartridges mounted to the developing unit, the printing operation is allowed to continue by switching the cartridge to the next cartridge. Hence, a large volume of monochromatic prints may be produced in an efficient manner.

In the color print mode, images are arranged on an intermediate transfer belt 71 with a first spacing d1(a) suited for the color print mode, the first spacing shorter than a second spacing d2(a). Hence, the second spacing d2(a) may be increased by the amount that the first spacing d1(a) is decreased, so that a sufficient time for the changeover of developers 4Y, 4M, 4C, 4K may be afforded. In the monochromatic print mode, on the other hand, adjustment is made to equate the first spacing d1(a) to the second spacing d2(a). This obviates a narrowed sheet spacing.

Transfer start positions for toner images in at least one or more toner colors out of four toner colors are corrected based on the registration control amounts (Ra, Rb and Rc), whereby registration deviations are suppressed to minimum and a high-quality color image is obtained.

Thus is obviated an unnecessary operation. The developer subjected to a predetermined print preparatory process is used in a printing operation so that an image of good quality may be formed. In a case where no Rank-1 developer is available but a Rank-2 developer, deteriorated to a degree, is available, the same procedure is taken.
