Abstract:
An on-chip mode-setting circuit and method are provided for a chip having an output driver with an output terminal connected to a pin of the chip. The pin may be defined between two states from exterior of the chip. The on-chip mode-setting circuit includes an electronic element connected to a bias input of the output driver for producing a voltage when the pin is defined at one of the two states, and a voltage detector for monitoring the voltage to determine which one of the two states the pin is at, and producing a mode-setting signal accordingly.
Abstract:
For charging a bootstrap capacitor in a voltage converter, a circuit is provided for wider bandwidth to eliminate the feedback stability issue and pin out for compensation circuit. A pair of transistors are connected in series between a power input and the bootstrap capacitor, the first transistor is switched synchronously with a low-side transistor of the voltage converter, and a comparator compares a feedback voltage drawn from a feedback node between the pair of transistors with a reference voltage, to control the second transistor to determine to charge the bootstrap capacitor.
Abstract:
A power converter uses a PWM controller to provide a driver output to modulate the duty of the power converter. A protection apparatus and method compare a current sense input of the PWM controller with a reference voltage to assert a signal representing failure, count the number of cycles where the signal representing failure is asserted, and reset an enable signal to inhibit the driver output if the signal representing failure is asserted in several cycles.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method are provided for suppressing the input current inrush for a voltage converter in a pre-charge stage. The voltage converter comprises a power input for receiving an input current, a power output for supplying an output voltage for a load, and an output capacitor connected to the power output. In a pre-charge stage, a current limiting device is connected between the power input and the output capacitor to limit the input current to flow therethrough, and a variable current limiting control circuit provides a control signal to the current limiting device to determine a variable maximum value for the input current.
Abstract:
For soft start of a switching regulator, the output voltage of the switching regulator is fed back to be compared with a ramp signal, in order to trigger a comparison signal when the ramp signal rises up to reach the feedback signal, to enable the switching regulator such that the output voltage changes from a residual voltage toward a target value. The low side switch of the switching regulator is kept off for a period of time after the switching regulator is enabled, so as to prevent a reverse current during the soft start period.
Abstract:
A mode transition control method and circuit switch a charge pump to an operating mode with lower conversion ratio at a regular interval when the input voltage of the charge pump is detected close to a mode transition point, so as to prevent from misjudgment on the mode transition of the charge pump due to external noise, loading change, or inaccurate equivalent resistance of the charge pump.
Abstract:
A PWM controller for a voltage regulator comprises an error amplifier to generate an error signal from a difference between the output voltage of the voltage regulator and a reference voltage, and a comparator to compare the error signal with a ramp signal to generate a PWM signal to switch the pair of high side and low side switches of the voltage regulator to produce the output voltage and an output current. When the output current is greater than a threshold, the PWM controller adjusts the reference voltage or the frequency of the ramp signal to reduce the frequency of the PWM signal, thereby reducing the switching loss caused by the switches.
Abstract:
A plurality of switches, an inductor and two capacitors are configured to be a boost-inverting converter. To operate the converter in a boost-inverting mode, a control apparatus and method switch the switches such that the inductor is energized in a first phase, the first capacitor is discharged to produce an inverting voltage in a second phase, and the capacitor Cout1 is discharged to produce the inverting voltage and the second capacitor is charged to produce a boost voltage in a third phase. Therefore, the boost-inverting converter has lower peak inductor current and less power loss, and the limitation to the switch design for the boost-inverting converter is relaxed.
Abstract:
An offset current independent sense circuit is switchable between a store state and a sense state. In the store state, the sense circuit stores an offset current to a capacitor, and the influence of the offset current is eliminated by a transistor to regenerate the offset current based on a signal provided by the capacitor in the sense state.
Abstract:
A spring modulation is proposed to regulate the output voltage of a voltage regulator. The spring modulation comprises a differential amplifier to generate a pair of voltage signal and current signal varied with the difference between a reference signal and a feedback signal related to the output voltage, and a PWM generator to generate a PWM signal in response to the pair of voltage signal and current signal to regulate the output voltage, in such a manner that, in load transient, the greater the difference between the feedback signal and reference signal is, the greater the on-time duty-cycle of the PWM signal is.
