摘要: A goggle includes a lens assembly which comprises a front lens, a rear lens spaced apart from the front lens, and a liquid crystal device disposed on one of the lenses. The goggle includes a frame, which defines an aperture and a peripheral channel. The peripheral channel receives the front lens and the rear lens is positioned rearward of the channel so that the aperture receives the lens assembly. A power unit includes a battery and a drive circuit, wherein the drive circuit is connected to a pair of prongs that are electrically connectable to the liquid crystal device for operation thereof. The power unit provides a master switch connected to the battery to control application of power to the drive circuit, and a state change switch to control application of power from the drive circuit, through the prongs, to the liquid crystal device.

摘要: A device placed by a support in front of the eyes of a user protects them against luminous aggression, in particular by a laser beam. The device includes a light attenuation system to attenuate the intensity of the received beam by a particular attenuation value. A light amplification system is disposed between the light attenuation system and the eyes of the user to amplify the intensity of the light received from the light attenuation system by a particular amplification value, but such that the intensity of the light transmitted towards the eyes does not exceed a prescribed maximal intensity that is not harmful for the eyes. The attenuation and amplification values are substantially equal.

摘要: Optically sensitive materials (18) such as sensors or the human eye are passively protected against overexposure to high intensity light (20) in the visible region using a reverse saturable absorber (14) comprising one of a class of organic compounds known as buckminsterfullerene, such as C.sub.60. As the intensity of incident light increases, the intensity of transmitted light also increases up to a saturation level, but above the saturation level, the transmitted light intensity remains substantially constant even with increasing intensity of incident light. C.sub.60 has an unexpectedly low threshold for optical limiting action, is thermally stable, and is easily manufacturable into devices.

摘要: A lens (12) converges a light beam (16) into a light absorbing body (14) having a material which exhibits reverse saturable optical absorption distributed therein with a non-uniform concentration. The concentration is maximum at the focal point (20) of the converged light beam (16), and decreases toward the lens (12) with a distribution selected in correspondence with the optical gain of the converged light beam (16) to limit the local fluence of the light beam (16) propagating through the absorbing body (14), and the output energy of the light beam (16), to predetermined maximum values. The non-uniform concentration further produces a self-protecting effect by causing the region of maximum fluence of the converged light beam (16) to shift toward the lens (12), thereby protecting the region of highest optical gain and highest molecular concentration, as the input energy of the light beam (16) increases.

摘要: A device is described using at least one polyconductor film as an active ment lens of an electrical circuit for detecting incident laser radiation. In several alternative embodiments, a polyconductor film is located at the focal point of at least one lens which focuses the incident laser radiation on the film. The polyconducting film acts as a variable resistor of a balanced bridge network and upon receipt of radiation causes an imbalance in the bridge for radiation detection. The film changes phase with increasing incident power such that it protects itself against high levels of radiation. The lenses can also be polyconducting films and another film shielded from the radiation may be included to compensate for temperature fluctuations and maintain circuit sensitivity.

摘要: A light splitting and recombining system, protecting observers and apparatus from destructive effects of laser flashes. Light from two paths is combined differentially to reduce, by interference, the light transmitted by the system. In one of the paths there is included a light-bleachable optical element whose transmissivity is a function of incident light energy. The system accepts low energy light of all wavelengths, but substantially stops high energy laser light.
