An apparatus and method utilize a rotatable drum implementing both an attraction mechanism and a cutter mechanism to controllably sever segments of material from a web. The drum is rotated at a rate greater than the rate at which the web of material is advanced so that the attraction mechanism supplies the sole source of tension in the web. Moreover, the cutter mechanism severs segments of material while at least a portion of the web of material engages the outer surface of the drum. In addition, an apparatus and method dynamically control the relative rates of advancement of a web of material and an outer surface of a drum such that a predetermined length of material is advanced forward of a predetermined rotational position of the drum so that the predetermined length of material is severed from the web of material while at least a portion of the web of material engages the outer surface of the drum. Moreover, an apparatus and method may utilize a carrier mechanism having at least one article carrier pivotably coupled to a rotatable hub and controlled via a camming mechanism that varies the angular velocity of the article carrier relative to that of the hub. The hub rotates about a first axis, and the pivotal coupling between the article carrier and the hub defines a second axis that is substantially parallel to and separated from the first axis. The camming mechanism is operatively coupled between the article carrier and the hub and configured to pivot the article carrier about the second axis in response to rotation of the hub about the first axis to thereby vary the angular velocity of the article carrier relative to that of the hub.

A label applicator, easily mounted on a desktop in association with a label printer, has a compact configuration with no external power requirements since the components are electrically powered and the power is received from the printer. Preferably the label does not move during application, providing a high degree of accuracy and placement. The applicator may be used with both linered and linerless labels and associated printers, and uses inexpensive components. Positive stops are provided for stopping the movement of a label into the applicator housing, and the manual movement of a mailpiece into the applicator housing. Sensors sense the label and the mailpiece when accurately aligned, and cause actuation of a linear solenoid with tamp pad to move the mailpiece vertically upwardly into contact with the label pressure sensitive adhesive. The label is held in place in the desired position by one or more electric fans exhausting air from the opposite face of an apertured plate from the label.

The present invention discloses a labelling system and process. A continuous single-ply film is provided with a reverse printed image on an inside surface thereof with opaque coating substantially covering the inside surface. The film preferably is very thin, less than about 1.7 mils. The film is applied with a system using registration control based on two sources of input data, registration indicia and cutter position. The system self corrects for variations in true label length. An adhesive applicator is provided, such as a laser jet spray adhesive or alternatively a rotating cylinder having a cam surface which contacts the label with adhesive utilizing a perfectly cylindrical vacuum drum to avoid container/label slippage. A controlled motor drive on the supply roll to reduce web tension is provided.

A combined label printer and application device is provided for labeling a plurality of individual product units with customized labels. The individual product units are conveyed through a data determining mechanism, such as a checkweigher or electric eye in order to identify data to be imprinted on the label. The information is conveyed to a microprocessor which converts the data into commands for a label printer. The printer in turn prints either alpha-numeric indicia, bar codes or other desired visual indicia on the label. The movement of the individual product units is coordinated with a corresponding label, and the label is applied to the product unit by means of a combined vacuum and air jet head. The individual labels, in a preferred embodiment, are coated with pressure sensitive adhesive, and are fixed on rolls to releasible backing strip. The individual labels are stripped from the backing strip and held temporarily on a vacuum head until the desired product unit is located below the head. Air jets then blow the label onto the product unit with sufficient force to cause adhesion of the label to the product.

In a device for the automatic labelling of objects moved past the device, a ribbon carrying self-adhesive labels in a spaced relationship is pulled in a stepwise manner from a pull-off roll over a dispensing edge to a take-up roll. The advancing mechanism for the ribbon contains a ribbon clamping device which moves back and forth. In the normal case, the advance of the ribbon is controlled by a sensing device responding to control markings on the label ribbon and, in the case individual control markings are missing, the advance is controlled through a limit switch actuated by the mobile ribbon clamping device. A step-up gear unit is arranged between the pull-off roll and the take-up roll and a slipping clutch ensures an especially simple and effective drive of the take-up roll and the generation of the required ribbon tension.
