A method and apparatus are disclosed for applying labels to a rotating container on a rotating turret. The apparatus comprises a rotating turret with an array of rotating container bays that can hold containers arrayed about the periphery of the turret. The container bays are configured to rotate containers therein about their axes as the entire turret is rotated about its axis. A label application assembly is disposed adjacent the turret and includes an application roller that is movable by a servo drive radially toward and away from the turret. A label web passes over the application roller. In operation, the turret rotates to bring rotating containers toward the application roller. Before each container aligns with the application roller, the roller moves toward the turret to contact the container surface and begin application of a label. As the container moves into alignment with and past the roller, the roller is retracted and extended in such a way that it maintains contact with or profiles the surface of the container until the label is transferred completely to the container. The turret then speeds up to bring the next container into position for label application, thereby increasing throughput.

Method and system for decorating a round, oval or irregularly-shaped, open-ended article with a heat-transfer, wrap-around label supported on a carrier web. The system comprises a turret for positioning the open-ended article at a transfer location. The turret comprises a continuously rotating mandrel and a motor, the motor being coupled to the mandrel for continuously driving the rotation of the mandrel. The rotating mandrel is appropriately sized and shaped to be inserted into the open-ended article through the open end thereof and to follow the circumferential contour of the interior surface of the open-ended article when the open-ended article engages and rolls about the rotating mandrel. The system also includes a feed mechanism for positioning the label on the carrier web at the transfer location, the surface speed of the web matching that of the rotating mandrel. The system further includes means for transferring a label from the carrier web to the exterior of the open-ended article, the label, during transfer, pressing the interior surface of the open-ended article into engagement with the rotating mandrel in such a way as to cause the open-ended article to engage and roll about the rotating mandrel. In this manner, the surface speed of the article at any given cross-section thereof is kept constant and can be matched to the surface speed of the carrier web. The system further includes conveyor means for feeding the open-ended article to the turret before labelling and for removing the open-ended article from the turret after labelling.

A laminating apparatus for laminating a material such as paper stock. A delamination system is provided for the laminating of the paper stock and the automatic separating of the substrate of the laminate from the paper stock while the releasable surface of the same laminate remains laminated to the paper stock. Once the paper stock is laminated and the substrate of the laminate removed from the laminated paper stock an image is transferred to the laminated paper stock. The image transferred to the laminated paper stock appears as if the image had been printed on said paper stock.

An article support positions the article at a label transfer station within the apparatus with the curved peripheral surface of the article exposed and the article freely rotatable about its longitudinal axis. A labeling carriage, mounted for reciprocating movement back and forth relative to the transfer station, moves a web of transfer labels relative to the supported article, such that the label web and the curved surface of the article are in tangential rolling contact. A heating plate, mounted on the carriage adjacent that portion of the web in contact with the article, releases one label from the web for transfer onto the curved surface of the article.

Furthermore, air may be blown into the article through the nozzle to support the article in instances when said article is made of a plastic or other deformable material.
