A process, system and apparatus is provided for passivating carbonaceous material against spontaneous combustion. The process involves drying the carbonaceous material in a low oxygen environment and pre-conditioning the carbonaceous material by contacting it with volatile matter contained in a countercurrent gas stream. The volatile matter coats the particles of dried carbonaceous material and plugs the micropores of the dried carbonaceous material, thereby passivating it against adsorption of water and oxygen, and thus spontaneous combustion. The pre-conditioned dried material then undergoes devolatilisation at temperatures at which volatile matter is evolved. The evolved volatile matter mixes with the countercurrent gas stream and is used to pre-condition dried carbonaceous material located upstream.

A fuel is produced from bitumen by precipitating a substantial portion of asphaltenes from bitumen by contacting the bitumen with a lower alkane solvent. Suitable burners include a fluidized bed boiler, a circulating fluidized bed boiler and a pitch boiler which utilize either pre-combustion sulfur sorbents or post-combustion flue gas desulfurization. The sulfur in emissions can be used to produce sulfuric acid. The process uses a low cost fuel, generates steam, power and sulfuric acid and meets all emission requirements for SO2, NOx and PM.

A mixture includes paraffin wax and a thickening agent, the thickening agent being pseudoplastic above the melting point of the paraffin wax. The paraffin wax ideally makes up 50-99% w of the mixture, and the thickening agent 1-40% w of the mixture. The thickening agent includes diatomaceous earth. The mixture may include abrasive material, fibrous particles, and talc to affect its texture when applied to an article. Also disclosed is a synthetic log of combustible material including wood waste and a hydrocarbon (such as paraffin wax), and a coating applied in a state of low viscosity so as to partially or wholly cover the surface of the log, which then sets. This coating is ideally the mixture defined above. The log may be wrapped in a sleeve which features a transparent window, so the coating can be viewed, especially if the coating is only applied to part of the log's surface.

An artificial firelog having a support surface, a viewing surface, and a pair of end surfaces is produced by moving a component mixture through an extrusion bore containing an extrusion die. The component mixture is divided by a blade extending the diameter of the extrusion die, thereby forming a flat rear surface on each stream of the component mixture. The blade additionally contains a cylindrical mandrel at approximately the center of the blade for forming a channel on the component mixture at substantially the center of the flat rear surface. The component mixture is then cut to desired lengths to form an artificial firelog.

Substantially soot free candles that incorporate paraffin and fatty material (hydrogenated triglycerides (TG) and/or free fatty acids (FFA)) that has a low Iodine Value (IV). The use of low IV fatty material and proper component percentages results in low soot or soot free candles. Paraffin/TG, paraffin/TG/FFA and paraffin/FFA candles are disclosed as are appropriate component percentages and/or IV values to achieve desired low or non sooting characteristics.
