Abstract:
A method for evaporating liquid, in which a drum 1 in which there are passages 8 which extend across the thickness of the drum wall 3 is rotated in a trough 5 containing evaporation liquid 6, while a gas is fed from the drum 1 to the passages 8 is provided. As a result of the gas being passed through, the liquid which has been absorbed by the drum 1 evaporates, with the result that heat is extracted from the system of drum 1 and gas passed through. Depending on conditions, the method can be used to cool, for example flows of processed water or to cool air or to desalinate water. A device for carrying out the method and a drum which can be used in the device are also provided.

Abstract:
In a cooling-air cooler (10) for a gas-turbine plant (29) of a power plant, in which cooling-air cooler (10) first means (13, 14, 15) for spraying water into the cooling-air flow and second means (16, 17, 18) for generating steam are arranged in a pressure vessel (11), through which the cooling air flows, between a cooling-air inlet (12) and a cooling-air outlet (20) in the cooling-air flow, simplified operation is achieved in that a water separator (19) is provided on the cooling-air side in the direction of flow downstream of the first means (13, 14, 15).
Abstract:
To improve both heat transfer and evaporation in a heat exchanger (10, 25, 42) of an air cooler, there are provided a number of spaced narrow wet wicks (13) over which air flows transversely, and those wicks (13) are sandwiched between impervious spacer sheets (11, 12), the surface configuration of the spacer sheets (11, 12) being non-planar so as to increase the areas of the wicks (13) over which air flows, and also to increase air turbulence and thereby mixing, the increased mixing not only assisting in the evaporation of water from wicks (13) but also assisting in the heat transfer through the spacer sheets (11, 12) which define the air passages containing the wicks (13).
Abstract:
A direct contact steam injection heater with a coaxial steam nozzle has a converging/diverging combining tube. The converging/diverging combining tube eliminates the need for an adjustable combining tube sleeve to accommodate various flow rates of a liquid or slurry entering into the heater. The heater is especially well suited for sanitary applications because, without the combining tube sleeve, the heater can be made so that surfaces in contact with the liquid or slurry do not have pockets or folds in which liquid or particulates can accumulate. Contact surfaces in the heater are substantially self-cleaning because of turbulent mixing action, and the heater can be quickly disassembled and reassembled for manual cleaning.
Abstract:
An evaporative cooling unit has an internal conduit structure with an inlet and outlet, an air blower for establishing a forced air flow through the conduit, and a plurality of nozzles that emit atomized water into the air flow. The nozzles connect to a source of water such as a pump coupled to a tap water supply. Sprayed water mixes with the forced air flow and is emitted as a mist or fog, the temperature of the air and water being reduced via evaporative cooling. The unit can form an inverted L-shape, a column or a framework, e.g., forming a pavilion. The unit can be inflatable or can be formed by rigid hollow columns and/or horizontal beams that form the air conduits and contain one or more blowers as well as piping for carrying water to the nozzles. A ball joint discharge fixture having air exhaust holes surrounding a spray nozzle allows the mixed air/water output to be directed where needed to form a refreshing cooled area, especially in the open. The unit is advantageous for cooling athletes at competitions, spectators at events, fire fighters, etc., and in one embodiment forms a cooled outdoor station for vending machines or the like.
Abstract:
A liquid heating apparatus capable of using low pressure steam and having a temperature control system to automatically control the output temperature of a heated liquid. The apparatus includes a tubular housing having an internal annular seal, and a liquid nozzle, that is connected to a source of liquid to be heated, is mounted for axial movement in the housing relative to the seat. The annular space between the nozzle and the seat that defines an annular diverging passage which communicates with a source of steam under pressure. The steam is accelerated as it is discharged through the diverging passage into contact with the stream of liquid being discharged from the liquid nozzle. The liquid and steam then pass through a converging mixing chamber where the momentum energy of the steam transfers to the liquid as the steam condenses on the liquid. The mixture then passes into a diverging diffuser section and the heated liquid is discharged from the diffuser through a discharge conduit to a site of use. A power operated control mechanism is operably connected to the liquid nozzle for moving the nozzle within the housing to vary the cross sectional area of the steam outlet passage, and a temperature sensor is mounted in the discharge conduit for sensing the temperature of the discharged liquid and operating the control mechanism to regulate the input of steam to the aperture.
Abstract:
The volute of an evaporative cooler is provided with a flange, and there are provided interengaging surfaces on the volute flange and discharge panel of the cooler retaining those elements in contiguity, and there are further provided at least two pairs of volute support means spaced from one another and from the volute flange such that the volute can function as compression means between the top and bottom panels notwithstanding the direction of discharge of cooled air from the cooler cabinet.
Abstract:
A skeletonized piston assembly in which a tube forms a piston shank and an enlarged thin disc has a peripheral edge which provides the piston skirt. A guide disc is spaced from the other disc and guides movement of the piston. Quick release fittings and a removable helical flight assembly adapt the heater for sanitary applications and easy clean-out.
Abstract:
In a method of heat extraction from an aqueous carrier medium through its expansion, the expansion is undertaken step by step in a number of expansion stages arranged consecutively as regards the flow of the medium. The vapor produced in each expansion stage is removed from the stage, and the individual vapors are subjected, respectively, parallel to each other, to a thermal utilization or revalorization.According to one embodiment, the carrier medium is boiler feed water, which is circulated via a heat absorption zone and through the expansion stages. The vapor produced undergoes thermo-compression and is fed to a common steam bar. The heat absorption zone, heat exchangers are heated by a source of waste energy. A produce of this method is a pure water vapor.
