Disclosed is a dimple magnetic recording head in a transducer assembly for linear tape drives. The dimple head has a flat transducing surface extending laterally a partial width of the magnetic recording tape. Two parallel tape support surfaces extend laterally the full width of the magnetic recording tape, positioned on either side of and spaced from the dimple head in the longitudinal direction of the magnetic recording tape. The tape support surfaces form a plane, and the dimple head flat transducing surface is parallel to the tape support surface plane and projects above the tape support surface plane to form tape wrap angles with respect to the tape support surfaces within a range of approximately 1/2 degree to 2.5 degrees. The dimple magnetic tape head is mass produced by lapping a row of transducers on a substrate to form a flat transducing surface. The row of substrate elements is then diced into separate substrate elements. The two parallel, spaced apart tape support surfaces are provided, and one of the diced substrate elements is mounted intermediate the tape support surfaces with the flat transducing surface exposed for forming a tape facing surface.

Gain information in a read amplifier, which is recorded when data to be measured is reproduced, is stored in an AGC control memory circuit in advance. By reproducing the data using the gain information, reproduced data varied according to the amount of flotation of a magnetic head and the position of the magnetic head alone can be obtained. A variation in voltage amplitude of the reproduced data is detected by an envelope signal generating circuit and a variation in phase difference between a reading cycle in which the reproduced data is read and a reference cycle is detected by a phase difference signal generating circuit. A calculator calculates a float interval of the magnetic head and a variation in the position thereof based on these detected variations. As a result, a decision can be made as to whether the float interval of the magnetic head and the variation in the position thereof exceed an allowable range. When it is judged that they have exceeded the allowable range, a warning is issued to a user so that the magnetic head and a magnetic disk can be prevented from breakage in advance.

A fly off transducer platform or carrier according to the invention comprises a platform for supporting at least one transducer for reading and writing from and onto a data carrier such as a magnetic disc which is driven past the transducer in a given direction and sense. The platform has on its face adjacent the data carrier at least one air gap carried by a skid whose major dimension is parallel to the said given direction. The front face of the said skid, with reference to the said sense of movement of the data carrier, forms a diverter blade to force any unwanted contaminant material to at least one side of the said skid and thus prevents this material from collecting at the air gap.

A method of manufacture for forming a novel magnetic read/write transducer head of the type utilizing thin film materials. The method of manufacture comprises steps which deposit a thin film magnetic recording head on a selected substrate having dimensions which enable batch manufacture of a thin film magnetic transducer in combination with its supporting slider assembly. The substrate of selected material in thick wafer form is subjected to a series of thin film deposition, etching and plating operations to form a plurality of thin film magnetic heads thereon. Thereafter, the substrate wafer is diced around each thin magnetic transducer head with subsequent finishing and polishing to requisite shape thereby to yield the complete slider and transducer head assembly. A particular form of thin film magnetic transducer head is further novel in that the head utilizes shield and pole pieces that are formed as multi-layer thin film pairs of magnetic material as deposited in order and formation to contain the magnetoresistive stripe and operative elements. The multi-layer pole depositions may be further altered as to number of thin film layers and thickness thereof in order to shape the magnetic fields associated therewith, especially as regards the trailing edge or write pole formation.
