The present invention has an object to provide a cold-cathode discharge lamp which can suppress sputtering on a lead-in wire and reduce consumption of mercury so as to achieve a longer lifetime without increasing an amount of applied mercury. The cold-cathode discharge lamp of the present invention is characterized in that a lead-in wire connected to a cylindrical electrode in a lighting tube is made of a material same as a material that forms the cylindrical electrode. It is possible to suppress concentration negative glow discharge shifted to the lead-in wire and to allow the electrode to be covered with even negative glow discharge. Thus, it is possible to reduce mercury consumed by excessive sputtering on the outer surface of the internal lead-in wire and to achieve a longer lifetime of the cold-cathode discharge lamp.

The invention relates to a high-pressure discharge lamp having a discharge vessel with a ceramic wall which is closed at an end by a projecting plug. A lead-through construction inside the projecting plug leads to an electrode inside the discharge vessel. Part of the lead-through construction is formed by a cermet, which extends fully inside the lead-through element. According to the invention, the cermet is directly fastened to the projecting plug by means of a sintered joint.

A significant reduction in thermal energy loss along the legs or ends of the arctubes in a CMH lamp is achieved in the present invention. The diameter of a mandrel (36, 40) is significantly reduced for CMH lamps. Either a single overwind (32) or multiple overwind layers (42) are used. Since the thermal conductivity of the mandrel greatly exceeds that of the overwind, the axial thermal conductivity will scale like the cross sectional area of the mandrel alone.
