    摘要: A display system includes a reflective display panel and a light source tailored to enhance the color gamut of the system. The panel, which may be a Cholesteric liquid crystal display panel, includes an array of reflective pixels, each pixel comprising a first, second, and third subpixel of different first, second, and third colors. The light source illuminates a front of the display panel with source light to enable observers to view images formed by the panel. The light source includes a lamp and an enhancing element. The lamp, which may be a metal halide lamp, emits lamp light that includes the first, second, and third colors. The enhancing element may be an optical filter, a supplemental LED light source or other light source, or both. The enhancing element enhances the system color gamut, for example, by increasing the color gamut area relative to illumination with the lamp alone.

    摘要: The present invention has an object to provide a cold-cathode discharge lamp which can suppress sputtering on a lead-in wire and reduce consumption of mercury so as to achieve a longer lifetime without increasing an amount of applied mercury. The cold-cathode discharge lamp of the present invention is characterized in that a lead-in wire connected to a cylindrical electrode in a lighting tube is made of a material same as a material that forms the cylindrical electrode. It is possible to suppress concentration negative glow discharge shifted to the lead-in wire and to allow the electrode to be covered with even negative glow discharge. Thus, it is possible to reduce mercury consumed by excessive sputtering on the outer surface of the internal lead-in wire and to achieve a longer lifetime of the cold-cathode discharge lamp.

    摘要: In a discharge bulb having an arc tube formed with pinch seal portions on both ends of a sealed glass bulb that is a light-emitting discharge section, infrared transmitting films for blocking visible light and transmitting infrared light are applied to at least the pinch seal portions of the arc tube to prevent visible light from exiting the pinch seal portions and to suppress generation of glare. Infrared light from the pinch seal portions can pass through the infrared transmitting films, which prevents accumulation of heat in the arc tube (pinch seal portions and sealed glass bulb), thereby preventing the temperature of the arc tube from increasing excessively.

Another discharge lamp includes an envelope; a fill which emits light when excited disposed in the envelope; a source of excitation power coupled to the fill to excite the fill and cause the fill to emit light; and a reflective ceramic structure disposed around the envelope and defining an light emitting opening, wherein the structure comprises a sintered body built up directly on the envelope and made from a combination of alumina and silica.

    摘要: The spectral energy characteristic of a discharge lamp is controlled by changing the density of the fill substance. The spectral characteristic can be shifted while substantially maintaining its shape by changing the density of the fill. A sulfur or selenium containing discharge lamp which is operated at a pressure of at least about 1 atmosphere contains a low ionization potential substance in the fill. Characteristics which are improved are one or more of spatial color uniformity, extinguishing characteristics, and bulb starting reliability. Particular substances which are added to the fill are alkalai metal containing substances, III B metal containing substances, and alkaline earth metal containing substances. When light is reflected back into the bulb, the light which is re-emitted is stronger in the higher wavelengths.

    摘要: A jacketed metal halide discharge lamp combining a miniature arc tube containing sodium iodide and a standby filament within an outer envelope, is provided with a glass sleeve around the arc tube. The glass sleeve is preferably connected to a point of potential which is positive relative to the arc tube, suitably the anode when the arc is operated on d.c. The glass sleeve prevents sodium loss from the arc by trapping ultraviolet light and by shielding the arc from photoelectrons. The sleeve serves also to reduce color shift when the arc tube is switched over from "high" to "low", and to protect the outer bulb in the event of arc tube rupture.

    摘要: A high pressure sodium vapor lamp having an elongated light-transmitting refractory arc tube with closure members sealing each end of the arc tube. An elongated hollow refractory metal member of predetermined length and surface area projects from the arc tube and is sealed through one of the closure members. The interior of the hollow metal member opens into the interior of the arc tube and the projecting end of the hollow metal member is sealed. During the operation of the lamp, the hollow metal member acts as a condensing repository for excess discharge sustaining filling which is not vaporized since the coolest spot of the hollow metal member is at a temperature less than the arc tube. The hollow metal member is provided on the outer surface with a radiation-emissive and electrical-insulating means, and a resistive-heater member is affixed to the exterior of the hollow metal member and in thermal contact with the radiation-emissive and electrical-insulating means. The resistive-heater member generates a predetermined power dissipation when carrying the normal operating current of the lamp to provide a heating effect for the metal member. Voltage rises in the lamp are normally encountered during prolonged operation and typically cause the lamp current to decrease, reducing the heating provided by the resistive-heater member which at least in part compensates for the tendency for increased voltage to be developed across the arc tube.
