Abstract: The present invention relates to a three-dimensional multiphasic synthetic tissue scaffold comprising first, second and third compartments, wherein: each said compartment comprises distinct microstructural, and/or chemical, and/or mechanical properties, and is connected with at least one other compartment of the scaffold via a continuous interface; the tissue scaffold is porous; and the external morphology of the tissue scaffold mimics that of a mammalian joint or a component thereof. The invention further relates to a method for producing the three dimensional multiphasic synthetic tissue scaffold using a polymeric material, the method comprising using a three-dimensional (3D) bioprinter to print the tissue scaffold by continuously deposit the polymeric material onto a platform until the tissue scaffold is produced in its entirety.

Abstract: A luminescent photonic structure that comprises a luminescent material that when excited by an excitation light having a wavelength within an excitation wavelength spectrum of the luminescent material emits luminescent light having a luminescence wavelength spectrum. The luminescent photonic structure comprises a photonic crystal disposed between two other photonic crystals. The photonic crystal has a photonic lattice period within one of the luminescence wavelength spectrum and the excitation wavelength spectrum. The two other photonic crystals each have a photonic lattice period within the other of the luminescence wavelength spectrum and the excitation wavelength spectrum for reflecting one of excitation light and luminescent light propagating within the photonic crystal.

Abstract: A process for forming graphene, includes: depositing at least a first and a second metal onto a surface of silicon carbide (SiC), and heating the SiC and the first and second metals under conditions that cause the first metal to react with silicon of the silicon carbide to form carbon and at least one stable silicide. The corresponding solubilities of the carbon in the stable silicide and in the second metal are sufficiently low that the carbon produced by the silicide reaction forms a graphene layer on the SiC.

Abstract: A method and composition for eliciting an immune response to group A streptococcal bacteria in a mammal is provided, which includes administering to the mammal an M protein fragment, variant or derivative thereof and a SpyCEP protein or peptide fragment, or an antibody to the SpyCEP protein or fragment to facilitate restoring or enhancing neutrophil activity. Also provided is an immunodominant peptide fragment of SpyCEP.
