    Abstract: A HIGH TEMPERATURE THERMOMETER EMPLOYING A BIMETALLIC TEMPERATURE SENSING ELEMENT ADJACENT ONE END OF A SEALED HOUSING. AN OXYGEN GETTER IS LOCATED ADJACENT THE BIMETAL ELEMENT THAT REMOVES FROM ATMOSPHERE WITHIN SAID SEALED HOUSING TRACE AMOUNTS OF OXYGEN. AN INDICATOR IS WITHIN SAID SEALED HOUSING REMOTE FROM THE BIMETALLIC ELEMENT AND A TEMPERATURE SCALE IS SECURED TO SAID HOUSING ADJACENT SAID INDICATOR. A FORCE TRANSMITTER IS CONNECTED BETWEEN THE BIMETALLIC ELEMENT AND INDICATOR TO MOVE SAID INDICATOR IN RESPONSE TO THERMAL EXPANSION OF SAID BIMETALLIC ELEMENT.

    Abstract: An indicating instrument is described which displays the value of some driving or control signal on a viewing screen as a sharp, bright image which is devoid of noticeable light-dispersion effects, such as image shadowing or rainbowing. This result is accomplished by focusing a concentrated light beam onto the path of movement of the image-forming element which takes the more specific form of a movable transparent vane. The diverging vane image is focused onto the viewing screen by means of a concave mirror having its concave reflecting surface spaced from, and facing, the back surface of the viewing screen. The vane is caused to move in the prescribed path in response to the signal applied to the instrument. The concave mirror is preferably of spherical or aspheric shape and serves as an efficient collector and reflector of incident light rays. Also disclosed is a panelmountable indicating instrument of overall rectangular shape and a flat and relatively thin edgewise appearance made possible by an optical system which provides vane images having the abovedescribed characteristics.

    Abstract: A low-cost, worm-driven potentiometer is described which may be constructed using only a few components and yet retains good performance characteristics. Components which are conventionally used in this type of potentiometer, but which may at least be omitted in accordance with the instant invention without deleteriously affecting performance characteristics, especially the specific tolerance of resolution, include axial constraints for preventing the driving worm from moving axially in the potentiometer housing. This is made possible by utilizing a wormdrive comprising a driving worm having a threaded section of hourglass profile and a driven spur gear. The meshing engagement between the worm and gear is preferably effected with at least an interference tooth contact and the hourglass worm-drive provides self-nullification of axially directed forces which would tend to cause resultant axial displacements of the worm upon worm rotation. Further simplification is made possible by utilizing a collector pin as the axial support for the driven gear and as a means for preventing the overdriving of a contact element rotatable with the driven gear. Moreover, the contact element cooperates with the collector pin to provide a resilient axial support for the driven gear.
