Abstract: Malfunction or failure of mechanical, electrical and electro-mechanical equipment, for example equipment used in manufacturing operations, is often preceded by an increase in the operating temperature of at least some portion of the equipment. Some pre-determined temperature, greater than the highest normal operating temperature of the equipment, is presumed or known to be indicative of impending equipment failure if no remedial action is taken. A resettable, temperature-sensitive device, containing a shape memory alloy actuator, pre-selected to operate at the pre-determined temperature, is disclosed. The device is placed in thermal contact with the equipment. If the equipment achieves the pre-determined temperature, the shape memory alloy actuator causes the device to display a flag or provide some other passive visual indication. Alternatively, or additionally, the actuator may trigger an electrically-powered alert including visual or audible alerts or a wireless communication.

Abstract: A temperature-sensitive label is described. The temperature-sensitive label has a temperature-sensitive system having a filiform shape memory member that has a first end portion having a terminal part fixedly secured to a first contact member, a second end portion having a terminal part restrained by a second contact member in a non-permanent way, and a central curved portion. The central curved portion is in the martensitic phase while the first and second portions are in the austenitic phase at a same environmental temperature above a critical threshold temperature to be monitored by the label such that in case of exposure to a temperature lower than the preset critical threshold temperature the end portions of the filiform shape member perform a phase transition, from austenitic phase to martensitic phase, which causes its irreversible disengagement from the restraint formed by the second contact member. The disengagement condition is optionally visible, for example, through a transparent window and/or monitored by an RFID system.

Abstract: A circular temperature gauge includes tubing which encloses a temperature sensor and a housing which encloses a needle connected to the sensor and a dial connected to the housing. The housing is secured with respect to the tubing such that the housing can be rotated to calibrate the indicator needle with respect to the dial. A slip bezel is mounted on the periphery of the circular housing. The force required to rotate the bezel with respect to the housing is less than the force required to rotate the housing with respect to the tubing. This prevents a worker who is in the process of installing the gauge from inadvertently rotating the housing with respect to the tubing and substantially miscalibrating the gauge.

Abstract: A fiber optics condition sensor and a method of producing such a device is disclosed. A bundle of optical fibers provides a planar termination on one end and is bifurcated to provide one group adapted to be connected to a light source and another group adapted to be connected to a detector. A shallow, curved, thin metallic diaphragm provides a central portion movable toward and away from the termination in response to the condition being sensed in order to vary the light reflected to the detector and therefore produce a detector output signal which is a function of the changes in conditions being sensed. The diaphragm may be formed of bimetal for sensing temperature conditions, or of a homogeneous metal to sense pressure. The curvature formed in the diaphragm is selected to provide movement of the central portion of the diaphragm through a distance selected to match the reflective light intensity versus spacing curve so that the system provides substantially the maximum response over a predetermined range of conditions being sensed. Variations in the curvature of the diaphragm are compensated for in the mounting of the diaphragm with respect to the fiber optics termination so as to ensure maximum response in the total system.

Abstract: A universal mounting for a bi-metallic thermometer comprising a case connector secured to the underside of the thermometer case and a stem connector at the upper most end of the stem. The case connector is telescopingly received within the stem connector and is rotatably adjustable. Means are provided in association with the stem connector to lock the case connector in any desired rotative position. Accordingly, the case, pointer, shaft and bi-metal coil may be rotated to any desired position for easy reading of the calibrated scale, or if necessary, removed from or replaced in the stem connector.
