A code symbol reading system comprising first and second scanners. The first scanner employs a holographic scanning disc to generate an omnidirectional laser scanning pattern within a large 3-D scanning volume. The first scanner detects the location of a code symbol within the 3-D scanning volume and produces data indicative of its location therewithin. Using this location data, the second scanner produces a high density scanning pattern to aggressively scan the region in which the code symbol has been detected, and collect scan data for decode processing. By virtue of the system and method of the present invention, it is now possible to read bar code symbols located anywhere within very large volume of space, with a high degree of accuracy hitherto impossible using prior art techniques.

A hand-supportable planar illumination and imaging (PLIIM) based device having a hand-supportable housing with a light transmission aperture. A linear image formation and detection (IFD) module mounted on the support platform in the housing, and has a linear array of image detection elements and also image formation optics having a field of view (FOV) projectable through the light transmission aperture. When an object is presented in the FOV for illumination and imaging, the FOV focuses a linear image of the object onto the linear array of image detection elements. A plurality of planar illumination modules (PLIMs) are arranged in a rectilinear manner, and produce a planar illumination beam (PLIB) that is spatially aligned with respect to the FOV and arranged in a coplanar relationship with at least a portion of the FOV. Each PLIM includes a visible light emitting diode (LED) and beam forming optics for producing the PLIB.

Disclosed is a holographic laser scanner of ultra-compact design. The scanner has a scanner housing having width, length and height dimensions, and a holographic scanning disc for scanning and focusing a plurality of laser beams so as to produce a plurality of laser scanning planes. A plurality of beam folding mirrors are disposed about the holographic scanning disc, for folding the laser scanning planes so as to project a complex scanning pattern within the spatial extent of a predefined 3-D scanning volume. A plurality of parabolic light collecting mirrors are disposed beneath the holographic scanning disc for collecting laser light reflected from scanned code symbols. In accordance with principles of the present invention, the geometrical dimensions of the beam folding mirrors in conjunction with the geometrical dimensions of the holographic scanning disc determine the width and length dimensions of the scanner housing, whereas the geometrical dimensions of the beam folding mirrors and parabolic light collecting mirrors beneath the holographic scanning disc determine the height dimension of the scanner housing. By virtue of the present invention, it is now possible to design and construct holographic laser scanner having minimized height and width dimensions hitherto unachievable using prior art design methodologies.

Methods of and systems for illuminating objects using planar laser illumination beams having substantially-planar spatial distribution characteristics that extend through the field of view (FOV) of image formation and detection modules employed in such systems. Each planar laser illumination beam is produced from a planar laser illumination beam array (PLIA) comprising an plurality of planar laser illumination modules (PLIMs). Each PLIM comprises a visible laser diode (VLD, a focusing lens, and a cylindrical optical element arranged therewith. The individual planar laser illumination beam components produced from each PLIM are optically combined to produce a composite substantially planar laser illumination beam having substantially uniform power density characteristics over the entire spatial extend thereof and thus the working range of the system. Preferably, each planar laser illumination beam component is focused so that the minimum beam width thereof occurs at a point or plane which is the farthest or maximum object distance at which the system is designed to acquire images, thereby compensating for decreases in the power density of the incident planar laser illumination beam due to the fact that the width of the planar laser illumination beam increases in length for increasing object distances away from the imaging optics. By virtue of the present invention, it is now possible to use both VLDs and high-speed CCD-type image detectors in conveyor, hand-held and hold-under type scanning applications alike, enjoying the advantages and benefits that each such technology has to offer, while avoiding the shortcomings and drawbacks hitherto associated therewith.

A bar code symbol scanning system for laser scanning bar code symbols within a 3-D scanning volume and automatically producing bar code symbol position information specifying the position of each bar code symbol detected within said 3-D scanning volume. The system comprises a laser scanning mechanism and a scan data signal processor. The laser scanning mechanism generates and scans a laser beam so as produce a laser scanning pattern which is substantially confined within a 3-D scanning volume having a plurality of focal planes. During system operation, the laser scanning pattern, consisting of a plurality of scanlines disposed within each focal plane, scans the bar code symbol on each object transported through the 3-D scanning volume. In response thereto, the laser scanning mechanism automatically produces scan data indicative of the scanned bar code symbol. Therewhile, the scan data processor processes the produced scan data so as to detect each scanned bar code symbol within the 3-D scanning volume, and produce bar code symbol position data specifying the position of the detected bar code symbol therewithin. By virtue of the present invention, information specifying the position of detected bar code symbols can now be accurately generated on a real-time basis, and used for various purposes including focusing a laser scanning beam to a particular focal plane within the 3-D scanning volume, steering a laser scanning beam to a particular location therein, as well as other control functions known in the bar code symbol reading art.

A method of and system for automatically identifying packages during package transport operations carried out by a human operator walking through the doorway of a storage container parked up to a loading dock, wherein a laser scanning system is supported above the doorway defining a passageway of 3-D spatial extent, through which a human operator may walk while manually transporting packages bearing bar code symbols. In the illustrative embodiment, the laser scanning system includes a housing having a light transmission aperture, and a laser scanning pattern generator disposed within the housing. During operation of the system, the laser scanning pattern generator employs a holographic scanning disc to project through the light transmission aperture, an omnidirectional laser scanning pattern which is substantially confined within the spatial extent of a predefined 3-D scanning volume that spatially encompasses a substantial portion of the passageway. As each package bearing a bar code symbol is transported through the doorway as the human operator walks through the doorway, the package is automatically identified by the laser scanning system supported above the doorway. By virtue of the present invention, a bar coded package can now be automatically identified as a human operator holding the package walks through the doorway of a storage container, thus improving inventory control accuracy and worker productivity.
