    摘要: Wiper plugs or other shapes are made from shape memory foam in a size large enough to wipe or clean a tubular of a predetermined size. The plug or other shape is then reformed to a smaller dimension above its transition temperature and allowed to cool while holding that shape. The smaller shape allows delivery through a running string that is smaller than the tubular string to be wiped. Preferably before reaching the string to be wiped, the trigger is applied to get the wiper or other shape above its transition temperature where it then reverts to the prior larger dimension for effective wiping of the string that it will next pass through. The trigger can be well fluid temperature or composition, applied heat from the tubular, generated heat within the wiper or other shape, or heat released from agents introduced into the well acting alone or in conjunction with well fluids.

The polymeric sensor system has multiple electric or nano sensors embedded in a polymeric material such as a tape that can be applied to the downhole equipment to sense parameters at multiple, physically distributed locations. A monitoring unit at the surface of the well may receive data from the embedded sensors. A control unit at the surface of the well may communicate control information through the polymeric sensor system to electrically controlled equipment downhole, eliminating the need for a control line that is separate from the polymeric sensor system.

    摘要: A screen that conforms to the borehole shape after expansion is disclosed. The screen comprises a compliant outer layer that takes the borehole shape on expansion. The outer layer is formed having holes to permit production flow. The material that is selected preferably swells with prolonged contact to well fluids to further close off annular gaps after expansion. In an alternative embodiment, the screen is not expanded and the swelling of the material alone closes off annular gaps. The outer sleeve is placed over the screen and the screen is placed on a base pipe and initially expanded from within the base pipe to secure the components of the screen assembly for running downhole, while minimizing or eliminating any welding among the layers. A variety of expansion tools can be used to expand the screen or screens downhole.

    摘要: A packer or bridge plug uses a sealing element made from a shape memory polymer (SMP). The packer element receives heat or other stimulus to soften the SMP while the element is compressed and retained. While so retained, the heat or other stimulus is removed to allow the SMP to get stiff so that it effectively seals a surrounding tubular. High expansion rates are possible as the softness of the material under thermal input allows it to be reshaped to the surrounding tubular or to the surrounding open hole from a smaller size during run in and to effectively retain a sealed configuration after getting stiff on reduction in its core temperature while longitudinally compressed. The SMP or equivalent material whose modulus is changeable can be covered on the outside, the inside or both with an elastic material that protects the SMP and enhances the seal in the wellbore and against the mandrel.

    摘要: An isolation assembly for downhole injection use is described that features at least one isolation device mounted on a tubular so that when injection fluid changes the tubular temperature which can cause a length change in the tubular, an anchor for the tubular is provided to resist such a dimension change. The result is that the isolation device such as a packer can be left undamaged and retaining its sealing integrity. The anchor can be an inflatable or telescoping pistons disposed to grab in open hole. When using telescoping pistons, their placement on the liner and their pattern can meet the desired locations where grip is enhanced. Use of cement inflatable anchors is contemplated as an alternative.
