A crank angle sensor comprises a magnetic recording medium rotating synchronously with crankshaft on which data is magnetically recorded and a magnetic sensor spaced apart from the magnetic medium and detecting the signals to produce rotational angle information. The magnetic recording medium is divided into plural tracks including an angle track and a cylinder track. On the angle track, unitary magnetic poles, serving as the magnetically recorded data are provided with a pitch P corresponding to the angle to be detected. The cylinder track contains unitary magnetic poles arranged adjacent those with a angle track in the pitch P and at locations which are determined by the number of cylinders of the engine. The polarities of the unitary magnetic poles on the cylinder track are the in same arrangement as those of the unitary magnetic poles of the angle track. No magnetic interference occurs between the unitary magnetic poles of the angle track and three of the cylinder track, so that angle signals and cylinder signals can be obtained with high accuracy.

An endless counting apparatus comprises a first memory for storing a code of a first predetermined number of bits sufficient to represent the maximum value of each coded input expressed according to the binary notation, a second memory for storing an endless-making code of a second predetermined number of bits of higher order than and contiguous to the less and least significant bits stored in the first memory, and a control circuit for adding or subtracting the value of the coded input to or from the contents of the first and second memories depending on the input value to be counted and applying the result of addition or subtraction to the first and second memories. A method for endless counting by such an apparatus comprises clearing the most significant bit of the endless making code stored in the second memory when the code stored in the second memory has attained a value which causes an overflow due to a carry from the contents of the first memory if the carry occurs, and setting the most significant bit of the endless-making code stored in the second memory when the code stored in the second memory has attained a value which causes an underflow due to a borrow from the contents of the first memory if the borrow occurs.

When the ring magnet (40) is employed, a deterioration in the detection precision of a magnetic encoder (1) due to the magnetization state of the ring magnet (40) can be avoided, and the deterioration in detection precision can be suppressed.

The drive controller of an actuator previously measures positioning error of an actuator output shaft caused by the angle transmission error of a wave gear drive and stores it as correction data. In a feedback control loop, a speed feedback value ωf is computed using the detected position feedback value θf, after corrected by the correction data, of the actuator output shaft, and a current command Ir is computed using it, thus performing drive control on a motor. Since a speed component caused by the angle transmission error of the wave gear drive has been added to the rotational speed of a motor with regard to the speed feedback value ωf, a variation in rotational speed of the actuator output shaft caused by the angle transmission error of a wave gear drive can be suppressed effectively.
