The present invention relates to gels prepared from novel anionic block copolymers of mono alkenyl arenes and conjugated dienes, and to blends of such block copolymers with other polymers. The block copolymers are selectively hydrogenated and have mono alkenyl arene end blocks and controlled distribution blocks of mono alkenyl arenes and conjugated dienes. The block copolymer may be combined with tackifying resins, oils and other components to form the gels of the present invention.

Disclosed is a process for preparing polymers and copolymer blocks of conjugated dienes with varying amounts of branching comprising the use of a microstructure control agent and a microstructure control agent deactivant. The polymerization can be started with or without a microstructure control agent. At some point in the polymerization prior to the completion of the addition of the conjugated diene to the polymer, the microstructure control agent can be deactivated, either partially or completely, resulting in a polymer or copolymer block having a region of less branching adjacent to a region of more branching. Preferred microstructure control agent deactivants are metal alkyls such as triethyl aluminum.

A super-tough polymeric composition comprising an engineering thermoplastic and a modified radial polymer. The engineering thermoplastic is selected from the group consisting of polyamides, thermoplastic polyesters, polyphenylene ether resins, polyarylene sulfide resins, polysulfone and the like. The modified radial polymer is modified by grafting a compound containing a carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid derivative group. The modified, radial polymer has from about 3 to about 50 arms, as determined using light scattering techniques and the arms will be olefin polymers. The polymer compositions will yield shaped articles which fail ductilely when tested using ASTM procedure D-256 at room temperature and some at -20.degree. F.

The metallated polyolefin is used to initiate the polymerization of polymerizable monomers to produce block copolymers of at least two blocks, at least one of which is saturated polyolefin.

A salt of a fatty acid is provided as a plasticizer for functionalized block copolymers of vinyl aromatics and conjugated diolefins wherein the functionalization comprises salt functionality. When this functionalized block copolymer is plasticized with the salt of a fatty acid the resulting composition will have higher tensile strengths than the raw polymer at and below the melting point of the additive and will have improved processability.

A suber-toughened multiphase thermoplastic composition is provided by incorporating an effective amount of at least one functionalized, selectively hydrogenated alkenyl arene/conjugated diene block copolymer to which has been grafted an effective amount of carboxyl functional groups primarily in the alkenyl arene blocks thereof with poly (ethylene terephthalate). The carboxyl functional groups are present as carboxylic acids and their salts in an effective salt to acid ratio for super-toughening the composition. Additionally, the block copolymer phase has an effective phase size for super-toughening the composition.

A modified unsaturated polyester useful in preparing molded products having improved impact resistance and surface characteristics is prepared as a block copolymer comprising at least one polyester block and an elastomeric block. The modified unsaturated polyester is prepared by reacting an elastomeric polymer having at least one terminal functional group selected from the group consisting of carboxyl groups, hydroxyl groups and mixtures thereof with either a preformed unsaturated polyester, thereby producing the modified unsaturated polyester directly or with monomer useful in preparing an unsaturated polyester and thereafter growing the unsaturated polyester via condensation of additional monomer. The elastomer is, preferably, a block copolymer comprising at least one polymer block containing predominantly monoalkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon monomer and at least one polymer block containing predominantly conjugated diolefin monomer units. The modified unsaturated polyester is useful in thermosetting resin compositions.

This method permits the production of polyolefin articles which are difficult or impossible to produce from polyolefin powder or pellets by conventional methods, such as articles of polyolefins of such high molecular weight that the polymer would not be processable by a melt process; articles containing extremely high filler loading; articles containing interconnected reinforcement; and articles from molds which require substantial flows through narrow passages.
