    摘要: A tape recording head is provided comprising a support plate having a contoured surface with an opening in the contoured surface which allows head chips to protrude far enough to allow proper head tape contact for recording. The support plate is fixed on a coarse actuator so that the support plate and coarse actuator move together perpendicular to the motion of the recording tape. The head chips comprising rowbar substrates containing a multiplicity of recording elements are supported on a carrier mounted on a fine actuator and are not fixed to the support plate to allow low mass fine actuation.

    摘要: In the tape head polishing method of the present invention the tape head is moved orthogonally to the polishing medium (such as diamond polishing tape) direction of motion during polishing. The polishing medium motion is synchronized with the tape head motion, such that the polishing medium is held stationary when the tape head motion is stationary, and the polishing medium is moved when the tape head motion is approximately at a maximum velocity. The tape head velocity VH and the polishing medium velocity VT during the tape motion are generally related by the equation VT≦VH Tan &phgr;, where Tan &phgr;=W/L, where W is the width of an insulation layer fabricated between a magnetic shield and a tape head read sensor element, and L is the length of a read sensor element.

    摘要: A multi-track magnetoresistive (MR) tape head with precisely-aligned read/write (R/W) track-pairs and a method for fabrication on a monolithic substrate wherein a plurality of tape heads are fabricated from a single substrate wafer by using complete thin-film processing on both sides of the wafer. The recording elements are aligned with readers opposite writers on the other side, providing a method for fabricating a multi-track thin-film magnetoresistive tape head with precisely-aligned R/W track-pairs fabricated on a monolithic substrate. As used herein, the term monolithic denominates an undivided seamless piece. The wafer is built using modified standard thin-film processes for fabricating direct access storage device (DASD) heads and modified substrate lapping procedures. The gap-to-gap separation within each R/W track-pair is reduced to nearly the thickness of the substrate wafer, which is significantly less than conventional separations known in the art. By fabricating on both sides of the wafer, hundreds or thousands of head elements may be aligned in one step while reducing the number of pieces in the completed head assembly.

    摘要: A precision clamping apparatus is described which is suitable for use with a high temperature curing process. A clamp according to the invention includes a base plate with a supporting surface for a component (which consists of two portions to be bonded together), and at least two alignment stops against which the first and second sides of the component can be pressed. A pressure plate is provided to mate with the base plate to exert uniform clamping force on the component to allow a uniform thickness of cured adhesive to form between internal surfaces of the component. The pressure plate is precisely aligned with the supporting surface in the horizontal plane by guides which allow vertical movement. The pressure plate is made self-aligning with the surface of the component by being urged toward the supporting surface by a resilient structure which is in turn held in position by attachment to the base plate. Adjustable lateral fingers are provided to urge the component against the alignment stops.
