摘要: Method, apparatus and computer-readable code are provided for detecting a location of an incipient ground fault in an electrical propulsion system of a relatively large land-based vehicle, such as a locomotive. A method embodying aspects of the present invention allows to simultaneously apply a forcing function to one or more electrical devices connected to a direct current (dc) bus. The forcing function is configured to magnify (without voltage stress to such devices) an incipient ground fault that may be directly associated with a given electrical device. This enables to quickly identify the incipient ground fault and to uniquely identify the electrical device likely to be experiencing the incipient ground fault.

摘要: A system and method for friction management for managing and controlling an application of a friction modifying agent to an area of contact between a railway wheel and a railway rail over which the wheel is traversing to selectively modify the coefficient of friction at the contact area. The system comprises a sensor for detecting a parameter relating to the operation of the railway train. A controller is responsive to the sensor and controls the application of a friction modifying agent to the rail as a function of the parameter. An applicator is responsive to the controller and applies the friction modifying agent to the area of contact between the railway wheel and rail. The invention also includes a method for railway train friction management for managing and controlling the application of friction modifying agent to an area of contact between railway wheel and railway rail over which the wheel is traversing to selectively modify the coefficient of friction at the contact area. The method comprises sensing a parameter related to the operation of the railway train and applying the friction modifying agent to the area of contact between the railway wheel and rail as a function of the sensed parameter.

摘要: A series-parallel rectifier system and methodology, employing multiple parallel rectification paths is disclosed. The system includes a dual winding AC power supply and a rectifier apparatus coupled to the AC power supply. The rectifier apparatus is comprised of rectifier legs interconnected in a parallel circuit relationship, where each leg comprises several rectifiers including a connection in series and oriented to conduct current from a negative DC bus to a positive DC bus. Bypass legs comprising two rectifiers including a connection in series and oriented so as to conduct current from said negative DC bus to said positive DC bus are added in place of redundant rectifier legs and interconnected with the AC power supply.

摘要: A shoot-through protection system for an electric power generating system including a synchronous generator, a bridge rectifier coupled to an output of the generator for converting alternating current (AC) from the generator to direct current (DC) at a rectifier output, and at least one inverter coupled to the rectifier output for converting the DC output to a controlled frequency AC output for application to a load. The generator has a separately excited field winding in which the magnitude of field excitation controls the voltage output of the generator. A microprocessor-based controller regulates generator field excitation in a manner to control the DC output of the rectifier. The generator is protected from a shoot-through in the inverter by detecting a sustained voltage drop in the rectifier DC output and reversing generator field excitation in response to such a voltage drop to rapidly drive generator output voltage to substantially zero volts.

摘要: A method for providing thermal protection for forced air cooled power electronic semiconductors without direct measurement of semiconductor temperature, the semiconductors being mounted on a heat sink over which cooling air is blown includes the steps of computing the cooling air mass flow rate, creating an electronic model of the semiconductor/heat sink combination and estimating the semiconductor junction temperature from the mass flow rate and model. The cooling mass flow rate is determined by measuring the temperature of the cooling air prior to passage over the heat sink, measuring atmospheric pressure of the cooling air, determining the volumetric air flow rate of the cooling air and computing, from the cooling air temperature, pressure and volumetric flow rate, the cooling air mass flow rate. Power dissipation in the semiconductors is then computed and heat sink and semiconductor temperatures are estimated from power dissipation and cooling air mass flow rate. Semiconductor power dissipation is limited so as to restrict semiconductor temperature to a safe operating value.

摘要: A system includes a cooling system having a cooling fluid for cooling an engine and a radiator fan motor; a dynamic braking system configured to supply electrical energy to the fan motor during a braking event; and a controller that is operable to direct the electrical energy from the dynamic braking system to the fan motor to cool the coolant to a predetermined minimum threshold temperature. A method includes switching a vehicle thermal management system from a first mode of operation in which the coolant is maintained at a steady operating temperature to a second mode of operation in which the coolant is cooled to a minimum threshold temperature.
