A slider block for a scroll compressor has a recess formed in a wall between a flat portion on the outer surface and a chamfer formed on the inner surface. The recess eliminates a high stress area of the prior art, and reduces cracks originating from this area of the slider block.

An abradable coating is formed on portions of the flank wall of the wraps of a scroll compressor. The radially outer portions of the flank wall are left uncoated, and can bear a force between the scroll wraps. In this manner, the load is not transferred through a coated portion, but rather through the uncoated portion. As the scroll wraps move relative to each other at run-in, the abradable coating wears away leaving a tight fit between the flank walls at the radially inner locations.

A scroll compressor is provided with economizer injection ports, which extend through the wrap of one of the scroll members. Preferably the injection ports are formed through a so-called “hybrid” wrap, which has a varying thickness. The other scroll member is provided with grooves in its base plate. The injection of economizer fluid occurs only during a portion of the orbiting cycle when the injection port and corresponding grooves are aligned with each other. An indentation is formed into the wrap that includes the injection port. The indentation is spaced circumferentially from the injection port. The indentation communicates with the groove, such that refrigerant can pass from the injection port, into the groove, and through the indentation into a compression chamber. This increases the injection time allowing more fluid to be injected into the compression chamber, and provides the scroll compressor designer with greater freedom to achieve desired flow of economizer fluid into the compression chambers.

Oil retention recesses are formed on either or both orbiting and non-orbiting scroll elements. In one embodiment, the recesses are formed in a tip of a wrap of at least one of the scroll members. In another embodiment the recesses are formed on the base of at least one of the scroll elements. The recesses ensure that a sufficient quantity of oil is captured within the recesses to provide the lubrication into the interfacing surface of these elements. Having an additional supply of oil provided by the recesses is especially important after a compressor was shutdown for long periods, as lack of lubricant between the engaged scroll elements can lead to the damage of these compression elements upon the compressor start up. Other events occurring during system operation may also cause momentary loss of oil supply at the compressor, such as, for example, compressor flooding, when the liquid refrigerant entering the compressor can wash away the lubricant within the compressor pumping elements. The additional oil supply provided by the recesses is also important during intermittent interruption of oil delivery to the scroll compressor elements or when the amount of oil circulation through scroll compression elements is less than desirable.

A compressor assembly comprises a compressor, a motor protector, and a signaling device. Upon an overload condition, the motor protector activates. The signaling device also activates to serve as an alert that the compressor is not malfunctioning but instead is in an overload condition.

A scroll compressor has an eccentric pin that extends forwardly of a rotating shaft. The eccentric pin generally has a curved outer portion and a flat outer portion. Each of the flat and curved outer portions have fillets that are formed to merge the eccentric pin portions into an end surface or shoulder on the shaft. The fillets are formed to have a relatively complex shape with more than a single radius of curvature. In one embodiment, there are two radii of curvature, with a greater radius of curvature formed to extend from an outer periphery of the eccentric pin, and merge into a second portion having the lesser radius of curvature that merges from the first portion downwardly into the shoulder. In a second embodiment, the fillet generally has the shape of one quarter of an ellipse.

A self-modulating scroll compressor includes a pair of valves. A first valve moves to a low capacity position when the pressure differential is below a predetermined amount. A second valve moves to a low capacity position when the suction pressure is above a predetermined amount. Low capacity operation will only occur when both valves are open. The present invention thus provides a scroll compressor design with the ability to self-modulate and control the conditions under which low capacity operation occurs based upon two criteria.

A compressor diagnostic system incorporates a control which receives a plurality of data streams about various operational features of the compressor. As an example, both temperature and pressure of the suction and discharge refrigerant are taken and sent to the control. Moreover, information with regard to the power being supplied to the motor is taken and stored. All of this information is utilized at a control which compares the information to expected values and determines a fault based upon the evaluation. Moreover, in another feature of this invention, much of this data is stored, and maintained at the compressor. In the event of a compressor failure, this stored information will provide a maintenance worker with a good indication of why the compressor failed.

An improved housing for scroll compressor has the end cap housing formed integrally with the fixed scroll member. The end cap housing is preferably welded to a tubular housing enclosing the scroll compressor. Most preferably, the end housing has inner and outer tubular portions and the tubular housing extends upwardly into a channel between the inner and outer tubular portions. A muffler is preferably formed integrally with the end cap and extends to a side of the end cap. The present invention further includes heat transfer fins extending from the end cap. The positioning of the muffler to the side decreases the overall length of the compressor. The use of the fins increases the efficiency of compression as heat is removed from the compression chambers. The use of the unique combined end cap and fixed scroll which is welded to the tubular housing simplifies assembly.

A scroll compressor has a fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll nested with one another within a shell. The orbiting scroll has a base plate with a pair of opposed slots formed therein, and a spiral wrap extending axially from the base plate. The fixed scroll has a base plate and a spiral wrap extending axially from the fixed scroll base plate nested with the spiral wrap of the orbiting scroll. A pair of towers extends axially downwardly from the fixed scroll base plate, each tower having a slot formed therein, diametrically opposed from the slot formed in the other tower. An Oldham coupling has an annular ring with an irregular oval profile which closely follows the outermost radial surface of the spiral wraps as the scroll compressor operates. The Oldham coupling also has an asymmetric shape with respect to any vertical plane bisecting a central axis of the Oldham coupling. A pair of opposed keys extend axially from a first surface of the Oldham coupling slidingly engaging the slots in the towers. A second pair of opposed keys extend axially from a second surface of the Oldham coupling slidingly engaging the slots in the base plate of the orbiting scroll. The keys and slots interact as the orbiting scroll is driven by an eccentric pin on a crankshaft to create a non-rotating orbiting motion for the orbiting scroll.
