Abstract:
A method and apparatus for removing particles from a flexible sheet. The sheet is run over a rotating rod, rotating oppositely to the moment of the sheet. The rod is immersed on its lower side in a bath of solvent and excess solvent is removed from the bath and is filtered. Additionally, solvent may be applied to the sheet before it reaches the rotating rod or a negative pressure applied just upstream of the rod sucks away the particles.
Abstract:
A process of producing high quality extrusion coated paper for high quality printing by extruding polyethylene on a highly smoothed base sheet of paper and passing the coated base sheet through the nip of two cooperating rollers, at least one of which rollers is a low-friction gloss chill roller having a surface finish with a degree of roughness between that of a high gloss roller and a matte finished roller.
Abstract:
The doctor device has a profile member pivotally mounted to a retaining member that is carried on a mount. Vertical movement of the mount causes angular displacement of the profile member thereby changing the material application area disposed adjacent and upstream of the doctor. The doctor is either a doctor blade or roll doctor. In the case of a roll doctor, a receptacle is formed in the profile member and the roll doctor is magnetically retained within the receptacle. During application of a material to an application surface with the roll doctor, the roll doctor is magnetically attracted to the application surface by a second magnetic device located beneath the application surface or work surface.
Abstract:
A device for the application of a thin layer of a coating material (7) onto a material web (2) passing across a backing roller (1) comprises a slot nozzle arrangement (3) having a nozzle slot (4). In order to ensure uniform and sufficient delivery of coating material (7) across the length of the nozzle slot (4), the coating material (7) is delivered from a supply container (8) through a delivery channel (10, 11) extending across the coating width to the nozzle slot (4) of the slot nozzle arrangement (3) and in the delivery channel (10, 11) of the slot nozzle arrangement (3) a gear pump arrangement (12) is provided which has a plurality of rectilinearly aligned pump sections (13), each having two intermeshed pump gears (14, 15), the arrangement extending over the coating width and arranged with the distance pieces mounting the pump gears (14, 15) between the pump sections (13) to be easily removable. The distance pieces (16) are formed as carbon bearings and the parts are channeled for heating and cooling.
Abstract:
A holder for rotatably mounting the metering rod in a rod-type web coating apparatus, such as used to coat paper, is made of a rigid but yieldably deformable material, such as a plastic. The holder includes a plurality of longitudinally extending conduits for carrying water to lubricate the rotating rod and removing coating particles which are carried by the rod from the web surface and into the rod cavity. The holder has a surface opposite the rod cavity for receiving a uniformly applied load along the longitudinal length of the rod holder for aligning the rod surface and/or applying a uniform nipping load between the rod and surface of the web being coated. A second surface also extends longitudinally for the length of the holder along a lip portion which protrudes from one side of the cylindrical rod cavity. The second surface on the lip portion is adapted to receive a second uniformly applied load to urge the rod cavity to assume a smaller effective diameter to maintain the desired sealing engagement with the rod.
Abstract:
A dual blade fountain coater for simultaneously coating the opposite sides of a moving web of paper includes a pair of oppositely positioned, non-contacting fountains and a pair of oppositely positioned metering blade assemblies which are mounted for movement about a common transverse pivot axis, which pivot axis is substantially coincidental with the blade contacting region on the web. Each assembly is independently adjustable of the other for adjusting blade angle and each fountain is similarly independently adjustable for varying the coating contacting region and dwell time. Metering bars may be mounted on the blades.
Abstract:
Apparatus for delivering metered amounts of varnish to the surface of a metal can, or the like. Varnish is delivered to a metering roll having recesses in its surface and a doctor blade to scrape off excessage. The varnish in the recesses of the metering roll is delivered to a varnishing roll in continuously metered amounts, and it is delivered by the varnishing roll to the surface of a can, or the like. Remaining varnish is removed from the varnishing roll by a second doctor blade so that substantially no varnish is present on the varnishing roll at the points of delivery of metered varnish to such varnishing roll.
Abstract:
Coating tubular plastics film by depositing on each surface of the lay-flat web a plurality of evenly spaced lines of coating material parallel with the length of the web, and using contrarotating rollers to spread the deposited lines, causing them to merge into a uniform coating.
