A forging (A) is received in a split ring (B) which provides peripheral support to a forging peripheral wall (14) and an upper peripheral flange (16). The forging and the split ring are supported by a nest member assembly (C) as a trimming assembly (D) moves longitudinally to trim the forging flange and a forging bore (10). A punch (74) with a hardened cutting edge (80) moves axially through the forging bore and interacts with a nesting assembly cutting edge (60) to trim the bore. Concurrently, a trim die (90) having a cutting edge (96) interacts with a split die cutting edge (36) trimming the upper flange. The split ring restrains a central portion of the forging from puffing peripherally outward in response to the punch being urged therethrough. The interaction of the trim die and the split ring inhibits the upper part of the forging adjacent the upper flange from being drawn in toward the forging bore by the interaction between the punch and forging. In this manner, the forging bore and flange are trimmed concurrently and deformation of the forging is restrained.

A ball header is disclosed in which the movable die is mounted directly on the machine frame rather than on the reciprocating slide. The position of the movable die is controlled by a cam driven pusher so that the movable die position is dependent of the position of the reciprocating slide. The machine provides a greater portion of the machine cycle for the movement of the transfer from between the dies after the blank is gripped and controlled by dies. The machine further provides a closed or bushing cutter to improve the shearing of the blanks from the wire stock so that the part formed by the machine can be closer to the finished size of the product to reduce the material content and the cost of finishing operations. The accuracy of the positioning of the movable die is also improved by the mounting of the movable die directly on the frame rather than on the reciprocating slide.

A method for forming a lap pin is disclosed, the lap pin being used with a cotton picker in one of the first stages of the processing of cotton from its baled condition into yarn. A lap pin is employed in the machine in order to roll up the first portion of the processed cotton into a lap. The lap pin is a single piece of forged steel having its end turned down to final dimensions for positioning within the picker. The sharp corners at the two ends are provided to accurately size the unit but the unit itself is completely of one piece construction to eliminate breakage at joints or securing points of a multi-piece lap pin, and the material is selected of high carbon steel to provide a spring action to accommodate foreign material which is always found present in the cotton as it passes through the picker. The method consists of a two-step forging which results in uniform molecular flow around the joint between the ends and the body portion. In addition, heat treating in a carburizing atmosphere at a temperature of not less than 1,450*F. for not less than four hours is set forth.
