Abstract: A tire tread is provided with a crown main groove, and outboard and inboard shoulder main grooves to divide the tread portion into an outboard crown land portion, an inboard crown land portion, an outboard shoulder land portion and an inboard shoulder land portion. The inboard shoulder land portion is provided with inboard shoulder lateral grooves connecting an inboard tread edge and the inboard shoulder main groove. The outboard shoulder land portion is provided with outboard shoulder lateral grooves extending axially inwardly from an outboard tread edge and terminating within the outboard shoulder land portion. The inboard crown land portion is provided with inboard crown lateral grooves extending from the inboard shoulder main groove and terminating within the inboard crown land portion. The outboard crown land portion is provided with outboard crown lateral grooves extending from the crown main groove and terminating within the outboard crown land portion.

The fluid passage (22) comprises an element chosen from a groove (20) and a cut (26), formed in the running layer (14) and extended by at least one well (28) acting as a radial extension of the element, formed between the groove (20) and/or the cut (26) and the sublayer (16). Each well (28) forms a localized part of the fluid passage (22).

Abstract: The tread comprises a plurality of blocks, each block being delimited by transverse or oblique grooves and circumferential grooves. Each block is provided with a sipe which has three branches. The branches have common ends. A first branch is oriented in a transverse or oblique direction. A second branch and a third branch each open when new into a transverse groove delimiting the block. The angle formed between the first and second branches is 100 to 125 degrees, and the angle formed between the first and the third branches is 100 to 125 degrees. After wear, each sipe represents between 45% and 70% of the total wearable thickness, such that the lengths of the three branches measured on the new tread surface, L1′, L2′, L3′ respectively, are shorter than the lengths L1, L2, L3 respectively measured on the tread surface when new.

The v-shaped portion 13 has an apex 15 located on the outside-tread-edge side of a widthwise center of the outside land region 4A. The maximum depth d2 in the second oblique segment 12 is smaller than the maximum depth d1 in the first oblique segment 11.

Abstract: A pneumatic tire having enhanced on-ice braking performance achieved by further increasing the amount of water that can be sucked up into sipes. In the pneumatic tire, blocks (26) partitioned by circumferential grooves and lateral grooves are formed in the tread. A sipe (28) is formed in a block (26), and a fine structure (32) having a height in the range of from 1/50 of the sipe width t to less than 1/10 of the sipe width t is formed on a sipe wall surface. This reduces fluid friction coefficient of water relative to the sipe wall surface to a lower level than conventional products. As a result, when water staying on ice comes into contact with the sipe wall surface, the water is more easily sucked up into the sipe. The construction increases the amount of water that can be sucked up into the sipe (28) or the removal amount of water that stays on ice etc., and this enhances braking performance (friction characteristics) on ice.
