Apparatuses, systems, and methods for removing acid gases from a gas stream are provided. Gas streams include waste gas streams or natural gas streams. The methods include obtaining a hypochlorite and a carbonate or bicarbonate in an aqueous mixture, and mixing the aqueous mixture with the gas stream to produce sulfates or nitrates from sulfur-based and nitrogen-based acidic gases. Some embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to produce the carbonate and/or bicarbonate scrubbing reagent from CO2 in the gas stream. Still others are disclosed.

The methods include obtaining a water-condensate from the flue-gas stream; obtaining a chloride salt; admixing the salt with water, steam, or both to produce a solution; electrolyzing the solution to produce a hydroxide and chlorine gas; admixing a portion of the hydroxide with the flue-gas stream to produce carbonate products, bicarbonate products, or a mixture of carbonate and bicarbonate products in an admixture; separating said carbonate and/or bicarbonate products from the admixture, thereby removing carbon dioxide from the flue-gas stream; adding a portion of the hydroxide to the water-condensate to change the pH of the water-condensate from acidic to basic, resulting in precipitation of the heavy metals; and passing the water-condensate through a filtering medium.

A method for continuous manufacture of higher-strength, lower-salt, aqueous sodium hypochlorite bleach from lower-strength aqueous sodium hypochlorite bleach that has some sodium hydroxide and that is essentially free of sodium chloride (salt) crystals, aqueous sodium hydroxide solution having a concentration by weight within a range from about 45% to about 51%, chlorine in gas and/or liquid phase that may or may not include inerts, and a recycle solution. Slurry is withdrawn from the tank at a level below where the lower-strength bleach, the sodium hydroxide solution, the chlorine, and the recycle solution begin to mix with slurry already in the tank. A first portion of the slurry is withdrawn and used as the recycle solution. A second portion of the slurry is withdrawn and processed to separate substantially all salt crystals from residual liquid that is recovered as the higher-strength lower-salt, aqueous sodium hypochlorite bleach.

Specifically, the present invention relates to the manufacture of potassium hydroxide and chlorine gas, through several process options, for the manufacture of sodium hypochlorite (or bleach), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and/or other chlorinated compounds. The disclosed process allows operating flexibility based on chlorine demand, reduces capital costs and eliminates the need for the transportation and storage of chlorine gas.
