The present invention provides an exterior wall frame construction for excluding rain, the construction having a frame and a water stop. The frame has a head, a sill, and two jambs. The two jambs are each connected to the head and the sill for holding a door or a window. The water stop is located at the head of the frame. The water stop has a top surface, a front sidewall, a rear sidewall, and a pair of end caps. The front sidewall extends upwardly from the top surface to form a barrier against water leaking over the frame from the exterior of the structure. The front sidewall has at least one weep hole located adjacent to the top surface, the weep hole being a conduit through the front sidewall allowing water to drain from the water stop to the outside of the building. The top surface is preferably slanted downward from the rear sidewall to the front sidewall, so that any water leaking onto the top surface runs down to the front sidewall and out the weep hole. In various embodiments, the water stop is either attached to or integral with the head of the frame.

Water is prevented from entering the wall interior of a building from in and around a wall component, such as a window, mounted in the building wall, by positioning a diverter directly beneath the wall component. The diverter includes an upper surface that slopes toward the wall exterior, a plurality of spaced, parallel ribs extending upwardly from the upper surface and beyond the exterior wall to form a plurality of downwardly sloping channels, a cover over the outer ends of the ribs to form drainage openings at the ends of the channels. A downwardly extending non-linear pathway from the drainage openings to the exterior of the diverter prevents water from entering the wall interior through the channels.

An improved self-draining panel threshold combination for a panel such as a door or the like which is of simple design and construction, and passes industry air and water penetration requirements without the use of separate corner seals or door bottom seals. The door threshhold combination comprises weatherseals around the entire periphery of the door lying in a weatherseal plane. An open-ended water trough in the threshold extends from one jamb to the other and lies substantially in the weatherseal plane for catching any water that leaks into and past the weatherseals. The threshold has a weatherseal adjacent the water trough that is adapted when flexed by the closed door to allow entry of water into the open end of the water through, and when unflexed upon movement of the door to its open position to cover the open end to prevent foreign material from entering the trough. A drainage system is provided for draining water entering the water trough out of the threshold.

A fixed sash window assembly has a generally rectangular frame holding a pane or panel of glass or other material and installed in an opening in an enclosing wall of a building. The frame includes a sill of extruded metal or rigid plastic material interally comprising a substantially horizontal web having legs depending therefrom to be mounted directly on a window base on the foundation of the building, and exterior and interior flanges extending upwardly from the exterior and interior ends of the web. The exterior flange has its top end portion held against the panel via an exterior sealing strip. A series of drain holes are formed in the web, just interiorly of the exterior flange, for draining the water that may flow through the exterior sealing strip. One of the depending legs of the web, disposed most exteriorly, has a horizontal ledge extending exteriorly therefrom beyond the window base into underlying relation to the drain holes in the web. A wet sealing compound can thus be filled in between the horizontal ledge of the exterior leg and the foundation of the building without the possibility of clogging up the drain holes. The drain holes are further protected against the backflow of water up therethrough by a drain shield depending from the exterior end of the web.
