摘要:
A method of optimizing a feature, defined by a wall in a wafer material, to an accuracy of better than 1 micron involves treating the wall with a reactive gas, by exposing the wall to the reactive gas, to cause the wall to become a cladding material and expand outwards from the wall in a defined, uniform manner until a desired size for the feature is achieved. An alternative method of optimizing a feature, defined by a wall in a wafer material, to an accuracy of better than 1 micron involves depositing a base material on at least part of the wall to facilitate plating of a material on the wall, on top of the base material, in a defined, uniform manner, and plating the at least part of the wall with the material until a desired size for the feature is achieved.

Arrays of non-rod shaped optical elements may be integrated with fiber arrays arranged in a positioning structure. The use of non-rod shaped optical elements allow the elements to be lithographically created already accurately aligned relative to one another. This also allows for simultaneous alignment of the array of optical elements with the array of fibers. The arrays may be one or two dimensional. The support structure for the fibers may be any desired structure. The fiber endfaces may be angled. The array of optical elements may include more than one substrate bonded together. Passive alignment features, including visual alignment marks and/or mechanical mating features, may be provided on the arrays.

An optical fiber array includes an alignment substrate, a plurality of ferrules, and a plurality of optical fibers. The alignment substrate has a plurality of guide holes which are two-dimensionally arrayed and extend through the substrate. The ferrules are respectively inserted into the guide holes in the same direction and have through holes in the central portions. The optical fibers are fitted and held in the respective through holes. The guide hole is formed into a cylindrical shape having a diameter substantially equal to the outer diameter of the ferrule. The light incident/exit end face of the optical fiber is exposed on one end face of the ferrule.

A connector assembly for securing and optically aligning one or more optical fiber arrays, each optical fiber array having a plurality of optical fibers having an outer surface. The connector assembly includes a base having fiber receiving features configured to receive and align the plurality of optical fibers; and a retaining element that covers at least a portion of the alignment features and secures the plurality of optical fibers against the alignment features. The retaining element has a first contact surface that contacts the plurality of optical fibers, where the contact surface is able to conform to the outer surfaces of the plurality of optical fibers.

The present invention provides an optical fiber positioning element (8) of an optical fiber converging portion (3) for converging a large number of optical fibers (5) led to a screen panel (4) for image display in an optical fiber display system. The optical fiber positioning element (8) comprises a belt-shaped body (9) and a plurality of optical fiber supports (10) provided on the upper and lower sides of the belt-shaped body (9) at a predetermined pitch in the longitudinal direction of the belt-shaped body. The optical fibers (5) are supported by engagement with a plurality of optical fiber supports (10) on the upper and lower sides of the belt-shaped body. In addition, the present invention provides an optical fiber display system wherein an image projected onto an optical fiber converging portion from a projector is guided to a screen panel (24) through a large number of optical fibers (25) converged at the optical fiber converging portion to display the image on the screen panel (24). In the optical fiber display system, a plurality of projectors (27a to 27d) are provided, and the optical fiber converging portion (28) comprises a plurality of converging units (28a to 28d) connected to each other. Images projected onto the plurality of converging units (28a to 28d) from the plurality of projectors (27a to 27d) individually are superimposed on one another on the screen panel (24) so as to be displayed as a single image.

This invention provides optical interconnection apparatus, which permit easy optical interconnections without a loss in the intactness of a routing pattern of optical fibers, and also their fabrication processes. An optical interconnection apparatus according to this invention has a base film having a two-dimensional plane, plural optical fibers routed on the base film an edge-dam arranged along or in a vicinity of a peripheral edge of the base film, a protective resin layer holding in place and protecting the plural optical fibers routed on the two-dimensional plane of the base film, and end portions located at opposite ends of the optical fibers and adapted to permit optical interconnections. The protective resin layer is formed, for example, by filling a resin material inside the edge-dam arranged along or in the vicinity of the peripheral edge of the base film and then solidifying it.

An optical wiring connection structure includes a board that has a first end and a second end. A plurality of through-holes continuously extend from the first end to the second end in the board. An optical wire is provided in each of the through-holes so as to extend continuously from the first end to the second end. An optical connector is connected with each optical wire extending from the first end of the board.

A method of making a three dimensional optical circuit featuring an optical manifold for organizing, guiding and protecting individual optical fibers is provided. One aspect of the present invention is a three dimensional manifold which may be constructed using a rapid prototyping process such as, but not limited to, stereolithography (“SLA”), fused deposition modeling (“FDM”), selective laser sintering (“SLS”), and the like. The manifold has a number of input openings in a first ordered arrangement at one end connected by passageways to a number of output openings in a second ordered arrangement at the opposite end. A plurality of optical fibers may be directed through the passageways of the manifold to produce a three dimensional optical circuit such as a shuffle.

A method of making a three dimensional optical circuit featuring an optical manifold for organizing, guiding and protecting individual optical fibers is provided. One aspect of the present invention is a three dimensional manifold which may be constructed using a rapid prototyping process such as, but not limited to, stereolithography (nullSLAnull), fused deposition modeling (nullFDMnull), selective laser sintering (nullSLSnull), and the like.
