A dry-type power distribution transformer has a generally rectangular, wound amorphous metal core and a resin encapsulated, generally rectangular coil. The core has a generally rectangular core window within which is located a substantially straight section of the coil. When assembled to form a power distribution transformer, the shape of the coil's substantially strait section conforms to the shape of the core window. The transformer is inexpensive to manufacture, exhibits low resistivity and low core loss, and is light weight, compact and reliable in operation.

A second anneal may be performed in a weaker magnetic field in a direction substantially normal to the first field to minimize AC hysteresis losses. The annealed magnetic glassy metal alloy sheet has improved soft magnetic properties such as low hysteresis losses and may be used for transformer cores and the like.

During investigation of thermal stability of the amorphous magnetic alloys by the Inventors, it was discovered that, due to the application of heat to the alloys, the hysteresis loop of the conventional, amorphous magnetic alloys was shifted in such a manner that the initial permeability of the alloys was decreased. It was also discovered that the initial permeability of the conventional amorphous magnetic alloys was irreversibly changed due to the application of heat to and the withdrawal of heat from the alloys.The present invention is characterized by the discovery of an unexpected relationship between the content of metallic elements and a metalloid element(s) of the amorphous alloy composition, thereby providing novel alloy compositions with thermally stable magnetic properties.The present invention is also characterized by incorporating an additional element or elements into an amorphous magnetic alloy, thereby providing the alloy with thermal stability.

The amorphous metal thin strip has a thickness of from more than 30 μm to 50 μm, and a side configured by a punched surface on which at least a shear droop, a shearing surface, and a fractured surface are observed, the width of the shear droop relative to the thickness of the metal thin strip being 30% or less at the side.
