In a cathode ray tube apparatus having an in-line type electron gun, magnetic pole pieces comprising four pole pieces of substantially arc-shaped cross section are disposed in a cylindrical shape with circumferential gaps between neighboring pole pieces 0.degree., 90.degree., 180.degree., and 270.degree. locations on the cylinder. An additional pair of narrow width stripe-shaped pole pieces are disposed inside said cylinder at a predetermined distance from the cylinder in a manner to cover the 90.degree. and 180.degree. gaps. The apparatus acting to modify the horizontal and vertical deflection magnetic fields so that the electron beam spots on the phosphor CRT screen are substantially circular in shape without losing the self convergence effect of the magnetic fields.

An in-line electron gun in a color TV cathode ray tube generates three coplanar electron beams. The raster pattern projected by the center beam is diminished in vertical height so as to be non-coextensive with the two off-axis beams. The gun is characterized by having two pairs of inwardly converging but non-intersecting magnetic field enhancer means, one of each pair being located at a point of beam egress and embracing in symmetrical relationship one of the off-axis beams. Each member of each of the pairs comprises an L-shaped bracket with the brackets defining an opening therebetween, with one leg of each bracket providing for attachment to the electrode. The brackets, the predetermined angle and distance, and their separation and length are such that the enhancer means is effective to divert the flux of the vertical deflection field through the openings between the enhancer means. As a result, the vertical height of the raster pattern of the center beam is enhanced into coextensiveness with the raster patterns of the off-axis beams.

In a self-converging inline cathode ray tube assembly having a convergence electrode with a flat base and a central and two outer apertures formed for passage of electron beams, a pair of substantially flat sheets of ferromagnetic material having a substantially U-shaped configuration are disposed in mirror-image relationship intermediate the central aperture and each one of the outer apertures with the open portion of the U-shaped configuration directed toward the outer apertures whereby the deflection field of the electron beam passing through the central aperture is relatively strengthened and the deflection fields of the electron beams passing through the outer apertures are relatively weakened to provide an enhanced vertical and horizontal scanning raster for the cathode ray tube.

An inline electron gun includes means for weakening the effect of a portion of the horizontal magnetic deflection field on the center electron beam and for strengthening the effect of a portion of the vertical magnetic deflection field on the center electron beam. The means includes magnetic shield members completely surrounding the paths of the outer beams. Each of the members has a portion that crosses the plane of the co-planar electron beam paths that is closer to the center beam path than to the outer beam paths. In a preferred embodiment, large shunts surrounding the outer beams are offset eccentrically toward the center beam relative to the outer beams.

The cathode ray tube electron gun has means for generating and directing a plurality of electron beams along substantially coplanar paths. Two sets of magnetic plates provide independent enhancement of magnetic fields for deflecting the beams perpendicularly to the plane of the paths and in the plane of the paths. Plates in the second set are in pairs, each pair having one plate on each side of a beam perpendicular to the plane of the beams.

A convergence cup for use in color kinescopes includes an improved shield structure for magnetically separating the pairs of pole pieces. The one-piece shield is formed from a single metal strip with tabs at its ends by bending it 180* along a lateral line and cutting from the strip a third tab extending from the bend line, and bending the resulting legs 120* outwardly along central lateral lines to form a Y-shaped shield. The onepiece shield is then secured in position inside the cup by spot welding the tabs to the cup wall.

The upper rim of the cup is kept intact and may be flanged outwards to improve roundness after apertures are formed in the cup sidewalls. Apertures in the cup walls are confined to those required for magnetic pole pieces extending into said cup comprising three pairs of slits in the sidewalls of the cup.
