A high strength concrete particularly useful for precast, prestressed products comprising by weight of the wet concrete mix, 8 to 60 percent cement, 0.5 to 20 percent smooth-surfaced, vesicular, expanded perlite, 5 to 30 percent water, 0 to 12 percent pozzolan, and fine aggregate and coarse aggregate as appropriate and available in the circumstances. The concrete provides superior bond to reinforcing strands. The smooth-surfaced, vesicular, expanded perlite is unique and novel.

A non-porous, substantially hollow, expanded mineral product, such as expanded perlite, is produced by uniformly and indirectly heating ore for about 1 to 30 seconds in an expansion chamber maintained at about 1400.degree. F.-2100.degree. F. to produce uncoated particles which exhibit superior short term and long term density stability characterics in liquid systems, and which may subsequently be coated to provide enhanced density stability characteristics.

A decorative tile having a front face with a design thereon varies in density so that the front face of the tile presents a solid appearance, but the overall weight of the tile is less than for a comparable conventional plaster tile. The tile of the invention can be made from a mixture including a binder, fiber strands, and a bulk enhancing agent. The decorative tile of this invention is particularly useful for ceiling decoration.

A lightweight building material comprises expanded perlite as an additive and a bonding agent structure consisting of an alkalisilicate and containing pores formed by foaming and/or expansion. The pore content which results from the pore structure of the bonding agent amounts to 85 to 99% by volume, with bulk densities of 40 to 200 kg/m.sup.3, and strengths of 0.01 to 0.5 N/mm.sup.2. A thermal insulating material which includes silicone coated perlite providing thermal insulation, powdered perlite to fill in the gaps between the silicone coated perlite particle, and a specially formulated binder for the perlite. The binder has a powder portion comprising a mixture of gypsum and cement for strength and a liquid portion comprising polyvinyl acetate, a colloid and water. After these materials are mixed in proper proportions, water is added to provide the fluidity necessary for application, such as by spraying or molding into prefabricated panels.

A perlite sound absorbing plate and a sound insulating wall constructed by arranging a number of said plates side by side and by assembling together into one integral body are disclosed. The plate is composed of a mixture including 1,000 cm.sup.3 by bulk volume of formed perlite particles each having a diameter of 0.1 to 7.0 mm, 100 to 140 g of cement, liquid rubber latex containing 5 to 20 g of solid ingredients and a suitable amount of water and produced by press molding with a compression ratio of 1.10 to 1.30. The wall is constructed by assembling a number of said plates each provided with a side groove with the aid of supporting columns and reinforcing plates, each having a ridge adapted to be engaged with the side groove of said plate.

The invention relates to expanded products made from riolite glasses with a natural water content of at least 4 % by weight, as well as to a process for the preparation of such products. When preparing these expanded products a granulometric fraction of 0.3 to 3.0 mm. of the natural riolite glass is subjected to a heat treatment at 220.degree. to 400.degree. C for at least one hour, to reach a residual water content of 1 to 4 % by weight, and the obtained partially dehydrated substance is expanded at 800.degree. to 1300.degree. C. This way expanded products with high quality can be obtained.
