Abstract: Systems and methods for performing an in-tool carbonization process including exotherm control on a fibrous preform includes one or more temperature control channels disposed in a heat treatment tooling fixture. A fluid may be moved through the temperature control channel(s) for controlling a temperature of the fibrous preform as the fibrous preform is heated during carbonization. A fluid source, a valve arrangement, and one or more heaters can be controlled for regulating a temperature and/or flow rate of fluid through the temperature control channel(s). In this manner, the fibrous preform may be uniformly brought to an exotherm temperature range such that shrinking of the fibrous preform occurs simultaneously and uniformly throughout the fibrous preform. The temperature control channels can be grouped by geographic location for zoned temperature control. The carbonization process can be performed using a single composite fixture or using both metallic and composite fixtures.

Abstract: A methanol synthesis plant comprising: a feed pretreating section operable to pretreat a feed stream; a synthesis gas (syngas) generation section comprising one or more reactors operable to produce a syngas synthesis product stream comprising synthesis gas from the feed stream; a methanol synthesis section comprising one or more methanol synthesis reactors operable to produce a synthesis product comprising methanol; and/or a methanol purification section operable to remove at least one component from the synthesis product to provide a purified methanol product; wherein the methanol synthesis plant is configured such that, relative to a conventional methanol synthesis plant, more of the net energy required by the methanol synthesis plant, the feed pretreating section, the syngas generation section, the methanol synthesis section, the methanol purification section, or a combination thereof, is provided by a non-carbon based energy source, a renewable energy source, and/or electricity.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a process to perform an endothermic methane pyrolysis reaction, said process comprising the steps of providing at least one fluidized bed reactor comprising at least two electrodes; and a bed comprising particles, wherein the particles are put in a fluidized state by passing upwardly through the said bed a fluid stream, to obtain a fluidized bed; heating the fluidized bed to a temperature ranging from 500° C. to 1200° C. to conduct the endothermic methane pyrolysis reaction; wherein the particles of the bed comprise electrically conductive particles and particles of a catalytic composition; wherein at least 10 wt. % of the particles are electrically conductive particles and have a resistivity ranging from 0.001 Ohm·cm to 500 Ohm·cm at 800° C. and wherein the step of heating the fluidized bed is performed by passing an electric current through the fluidized bed.

A representative system includes a pyrolysis reactor that can be coupled to a supply of reaction material that includes a hydrocarbon. Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed that monitor the carbon and hydrogen production of a pyrolysis reactor system and adjust one or more inputs to the reactor system to improve performance when one or both of the monitored carbon and hydrogen production falls outside of a target performance specification. In particular, the ratio of fuel to oxidant (“fuel/oxidant ratio”) supplied to a combustion chamber of the reactor system is adjusted to below a fuel/oxidant equivalence ratio range, defined as 0.9-1.1, when both carbon and hydrogen production falls below a target carbon and hydrogen specification, and adjusted above the fuel/oxidant equivalence ratio range when only the carbon production falls below a target carbon specification. The target specification can include a number of parameters including production rate, morphology (of carbon), and operating temperature.
