    摘要: New technology for deep drawing can bodies for use in the manufacture of two-piece cans for food and beverage products from precoated flat-rolled sheet metal can stock in which damage to can stock precoated on both surfaces with an organic coating is avoided and draw-forming of the side wall is controlled to decrease metal requirements. A draw die cavity entrance (47, 74) is selected to provide at least a major portion of its curvilinear surface having a radius of curvature of about five times nominal sheet metal thickness gage, or less, e.g. a maximum radius of curvature of 0.04 inch is used for the more commonly used can stock materials.     摘要: The invention includes apparatus and method for lubricating and cooling a workpiece, dies or ironing rings, and punch at the interface between the workpiece and such dies or ironing rings and punch in forming a workpiece into a hollow closed end cylindrical article.A lubricant liquid phase is injected into a coolant liquid phase to form a "dispersion" prior to application to the metal-tool interface. Providing the lubricant as a dispersion in the coolant liquid phase rather than as an emulsion provides several advantages. The quantity of lubricant and the time of lubricant injection can be varied to control lubricity and, thus, friction. The invention makes it possible to achieve differential friction in the ironing process by having higher lubricity on the ironing die (low friction) and lower lubricity on the punch surface (high friction). Lubricities and cooling are controllable for the specific metal forming process employed to produce closed end hollow body containers. After applicaiton, the lubricant and coolant are separated, the lubricant filtered to remove debris, stored, and then reinjected to provide lubrication for the process.

    摘要: An individually variable multi-stage drawing apparatus has a succession of drawing stations in a multi-level configuration, each station other than the first being vertically offset from and at a level lower than that of a preceding station. Each station includes a circular die through which a workpiece is forced by a cylindrical plunger. Each plunger is operated by its own individual hydraulic ram. In this way, plunger movement commences at a pressure and continues at a rate governed by the metallic flow requirements of the workpiece at each successive drawing stage.The invention further comprises transfer devices for shifting the workpieces from one drawing stage to the next. These transfer devices grip, carry and release the workpieces without subjecting them to potentially damaging frictional contact.

C. for at least 30 minutes.The invention can be applied to the production of bodies of cans for fizzy or non-fizzy drinks, from metal sheets which do not stick in the drawing process, using a wide range of alloys.

A punch is provided which is adapted to measure and continuously monitor the axial load on the punch nose and the total axial load on the punch, the distribution of such loads around the periphery of the punch, and bending of the punch near the base and nose due to lateral and nonuniform forces acting on the punch as the workpiece is forced through a die or dies. Determination of the forces, their distribution, and punch bending enables accurately determining the tensile stress at any portion of the sidewall.
