Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for fabricating a one-piece can body, with profiled closed end, from flat rolled steel of selected thickness gauge and tensile strength. Such steel substrate is electrolytically metal plated to facilitate sidewall ironing into an elongated sidewall can body for pressurized beverage packs. An axially-recessed bead is formed in the endwall of a drawn cup by pulling sidewall metal for movement into such endwall. That preformed bead being symmetrically positioned in the drawn cup such that a bodymaker redraw of the drawn cup positions sheet metal of the preformed bead so as to constitute a closed end angled portion, which extends from a circular configuration base support toward contiguous sidewall. Following subsequent sidewall ironing of the bodymaker redrawn cup, a substantially-planar endwall panel, radially inward of such base support, is formed into a concave dome by moving sidewall sheet metal into the closed end of the sidewall ironed can body, thus substantially avoiding thinning of closed end sheet metal and providing desired bulge and implosion resistance. Also, reforming steps for such closed end, subsequent to can body fabrication, are eliminated.

Abstract: Composite-coated flat-rolled steel, product, method of manufacture and method of fabrication in which single or double-reduced low-carbon steel, after surface preparation, is flash-coated with tin (about 0.05 #/bb) which is alloyed with the base metal. Dichromate treatment passivates the tin-iron alloy surfaces depositing a chrome oxide layer prior to application of an organic coating (about 3 to 15 mg/in.sup.2 to each surface). Enhanced coating adhesion of the organic coating enables draw-processing of the double-reduced steel base metal substrate into unitary can bodies without damage to coating or substrate.

Abstract: Convenience feature wall panel (36) and integral opener (52) structure providing Class 1 and Class 2 lever action severance of scored sheet metal. In a beverage can embodiment, a U-shaped tab (40) positioned on the can end wall with its closed end contiguous to peripheral chime seam metal (32) is moved from the original contour of the wall panel to provide a pour opening (94). Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a necked container are disclosed wherein a sheet material is formed into a generally cylindrical tubular member and the adjacent longitudinally extending edges of the sheet are butt welded. The welded tubular member is progressively necked-in over a dome-shaped surface of a single mandrel provided within the welded tubular member. Abstract: An improved easy-opening container wall and method of forming the same are disclosed. The easy-open container wall comprises a line of weakness in the container wall defining a tear portion at least partially removable from the container wall, a tab having a line of weakness severing nose end, a lifting end, and a hingedly mounted attaching panel located intermediate the ends for permitting hinged movement of a majority of the tab relative to the attaching panel along a hinge line to bring the nose end into forceable engagement with the container wall to rupture the line of weakness and bend a segment of the tear portion inwardly upon lifting the lifting end of the tab, and the tab is attached to the tear portion at locations on both sides of the hinge line to maintain alignment of the tab on the container wall and to provide improved resistance to pulling or tearing the tab material from the container wall at its attachment to the container wall before the container wall can be opened.

Abstract: An improved apparatus for and a method of trimming an outwardly directed flange at the end of a metal container body and severing the ring of scrap removed employs two substantially semicircular concave cutters supported for rotation about spaced parallel axes disposed substantially in the plane of the flange to be trimmed and driven for rotation about their respective axes to engage the flange substantially simultaneously to sever the scrap ring around substantially the entire periphery of the container. The ring of scrap is cut into four pieces either by initially die-cutting or otherwise removing segments from opposed sides of the flange tangent to the trim line prior to engagement by the rotating arcuate cutters or alternatively, the arcuate cutters may sever the scrap as a complete ring and sever the ring into pieces upon continued movement in their arcuate paths past a stationary clipper block spaced below the container flange. The container is preferably trimmed with the open end facing downward, with the arcuate cutters rotated to propel the trimmed scrap downward for easy removal without interfering with operation of the apparatus or feed of the containers.

Abstract: Draw processing flat-rolled sheet metal substrate preselectively precoated on each surface with organic coating and draw lubricant into one-piece can bodies ready for assembly into sanitary packs free of any requirement for washing, organic coating or repair of organic coating after fabrication and before such direct usage. Selective organic precoating includes embodying a blooming compound which is made available as draw lubricant responsive to heat and/or pressure of draw forming; also, surface application of a draw lubricant after curing of the organic coating. Combined lubricant on each surface is verified before start of fabricating. Draw-forming of tensile strength sheet metal is controlled over side wall height by clamping solely between planar clamping surfaces and by interruption of draw to establish a flange at the open end of cup-shaped work product. Surface area of the cavity entrance zone for each die is preselected along with curved surface transition zone on draw punch in relation to sheet metal substrate starting gage. Nesting of curvilinear clamping surfaces of the prior art is eliminated during redraw of work product. The curved transition zone of cup-shaped work product is reshaped prior to redraw.

Abstract: New technology for deep drawing can bodies for use in the manufacture of two-piece cans for food and beverage products from precoated flat-rolled sheet metal can stock in which damage to can stock precoated on both surfaces with an organic coating is avoided and draw-forming of the side wall is controlled to decrease metal requirements. A draw die cavity entrance (47, 74) is selected to provide at least a major portion of its curvilinear surface having a radius of curvature of about five times nominal sheet metal thickness gage, or less, e.g. a maximum radius of curvature of .04 inch is used for the more commonly used can stock materials.
