A sealant composition comprising a non-crosslinked, elastomeric mastic and an extrusion-inhibiting amount of vulcanized rubber particles of irregular shape and having sharp edges and angular surfaces. When the composition is used as a channel sealant, the ability of the particles to deform at structural gaps while offering resistance to extrusion prevents the loss of the elastomeric mastic.

This specification describes a process and apparatus for closing leaks and spraying a sealant composition to interior walls of an underground gasoline tank such as is used in retail gasoline service stations. A gas tank suspected of leaks is emptied of stored gas and purged with compressor air applied thru a valve control and pipe conduit threadly inserted in the conventional fill pipe of the tank. The pipe conduit includes a means defining an aperture at the lower extremity of the conduit which extends into the tank interior. An explosion safety level meter is attached to the pipe conduit for providing a humanly detectable signal of the environment within the tank. An excavation enables a craftsperson to cut an access port through the tank wall for entering the tank interior, cleaning-up residue, sandblasting the interior walls, and spraying a sealant composition of thixotropic polyester resin and a catalyst onto the sandblasted walls.

THE INVENTION RELATES TO A METHOD FOR SEALING LEAKS IN PIPES, CONDUITS, GAS LINES, CLOSED CONTAINERS, TANKS AND THE LIKE. THE INTERIOR OF SUCH EQUIPMENT IS FIRST PURGED WITH A NON-RACTIVE DRY GAS, SUCH AS NITROGEN, TO REMOVE ANY MOISTURE AND/OR OXYGEN WHICH MAY BE PRESENT. THEN A SELECTED SEALANT AGENT IS INTRODUCED INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE EQUIPMENT IN A SUITABLE INERT GAS VEHICLE UNDER PRESSURE. THE SEALANT AND GAS MIXTURE WILL ESCAPE FROM ANY LEAKS PRESENT IN THE EQUIPMENT INTO THE OUTER AMBIENT ATMOSPHERE. THE SEALANT REACTS WITH OXYGEN AND/OR MOISTURE TO FORM IN THE SITUS OF THE LEAK A SOLID REACTION PRODUCT WHICH MAY BE A METAL OXIDE COMPOUND. THE SEALANT AGENTS USED ARE NORMALLY GASEOUS OR VOLATILE METAL HYDRIDES, METAL ALKYLS, METAL ALKYL HALIDES, AND METAL ALKYL HYDRIDES. EXAMPLES OF THESE SEALANT AGENTS ARE SILICON HYDRIDES, ALKYL ALUMINUM HALIDES, ZINC ALKYLS SUCH AS DIETHYL ZINC. THE SEALANTS ARE SUPPLIED TO THE INTERIOR OF THE APPARATUS OR VESSEL WHICH MAY CONTAIN LEAKS IN SUFFICIENT CONCENTRATION AND SUITABLE PRESSURE SO THAT UPON ESCAPE FROM THE LEAKS A SOLID SEAL WILL FORM IN SITU.

THE INITIAL LAYER COMPRISES AN EPOXY RESIN COMPOSITION WITH A CURING AGENT. THIS INITIAL LAYER CURES OVER A RELATIVELY FAST PERIOD OF TIME (WITHIN 1 TO 5 MINUTES). OVER THIS LAYER IS ADDED A SECOND LAYER WHICH MAY BE THE SAME OR DIFFERENT EPOXY RESIN TOGETHER WITH A CURING AGENT WHEREIN A CURE IS ACHIEVED OVER A PERIOD OF FROM ONE TO FIVE HOURS.
