Data is first written into a plurality of test regions of the optical disc under a plurality of recording conditions, respectively. The data written into the plurality of test regions are converted into radio-frequency (RF) signals. The RF signals are Viterbi-decoded to obtain corresponding path metric increase rates. The path metric increase rates are used to determine an optimum recording condition.

The open-loop read control device is used in an optical disk writer and includes a memory, a DAC and an amplifier. The optical disk writer includes a pickup head device having a laser diode. When writing is disabled, the read power of the optical disk writer for reading the disk corresponds to a specific voltage. The memory stores a relationship curve and outputs a corresponding reference value corresponding to the specific voltage. The DAC converts the corresponding reference value into an analog corresponding reference value. The amplifier receives the analog corresponding reference value and outputs a read power control voltage, which controls the laser diode to generate a substantially constant read power in the write process.

In some embodiments, an mT pulse condition is first determined by test recordings with various power and pulse conditions, involving an inspection of recording quality; then an m′T/(n−m)T ratio is determined by test recording under the mT pulse condition fixed; and finally an nT pulse is configured based on the ratio. A phase shift can be corrected by test recording with the nT pulse.

A plurality of leads 10 pass through each of two opposite faces 63A, 63B of the insulating frame 11 and extend from inside to outside of the insulating frame. The insulating frame 11 has external faces 61A, 61B that are parallel to a mounting face 30a on which the semiconductor laser device 1 is mounted. According to the present invention, it is possible to provide a semiconductor laser apparatus that has good productivity and that facilitates position adjustment such as optical axis adjustment and an optical pickup apparatus using the same.
