摘要: Disclosed is a intelligent light source that is capable of providing a uniform illumination image across the surface of an illuminated object analyzed by an optical detector. This is accomplished by individually controlling each light-emitting element of a linear array of light elements. Calibration of the array is accomplished by sequentially illuminating each optical element of the source and building an array of normalized detected data. The matrix is then inverted and multiplied by a linear array of ones to generate the calibration data. The calibration data are then used to program a simple logic device that allows accurate digital control of the intensity of each individual light element.

摘要: A transducer for generating a write signal includes a write gap layer and bottom and top poles. The write gap layer is oriented normal to a media bearing surface. The bottom pole has a first magnetic material inner layer disposed adjacent the write gap layer for coupling the write signal to the media bearing surface. The top pole has a first magnetic material inner layer and a second magnetic material outer layer. The top pole is disposed adjacent the write gap layer on a side opposite the bottom pole at the media bearing surface with the top pole inner layer disposed between the gap layer and the top pole outer layer. The top pole has a constant width at the media bearing surface and couples the write signal to the media bearing surface. A coil passes between the bottom and top poles for inducing the write signal in the poles.

摘要: A method and system are provided for dynamically shortening a number of error correction codewords to correspond to an amount of user data to be recorded on a recording medium. The system and method determine in advance that the number of bytes of user data will only fill a portion of a codeword matrix, and automatically shortens the size of ECC word segments to match the actual user data fill. This allows an ECC interleave to be completed with only a partial fill of the matrix, thereby reducing the required number of recording passes and associated processing time.

摘要: An adaptive trellis adaptable to read a signal having signal amplitude dropouts includes a standard partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) trellis and an estimating PRML trellis. The standard trellis is associated with a standard state diagram having standard branches between states. A first set of the standard branches produce a non-zero amplitude read signal sample and a second set of the standard branches produce a zero amplitude read signal sample. Each state of the standard state diagram has two standard branches feeding into that state. The estimating trellis is associated with an estimating state diagram having estimating branches between states. The estimating branches produce estimated read signal samples that adapt to the amplitude of the signal. Each state of the estimating state diagram has two estimating branches feeding into that state. Each standard and estimating branch has an associated error metric. Each state of the standard state diagram has two estimating branches feeding into that state and each state of the estimating state diagram has two standard branches feeding into that state. The states are connected by paths formed by branches between the states. A path error metric is the sum of all branch error metrics for all of the branches that form the path. The path arriving at one state having the lowest path error metric survives to be identified as the expected path to the next state for reading the signal.

摘要: The intelligent data storage manager functions to combine the non-homogeneous physical devices contained in a data storage subsystem to create a logical device with new and unique quality of service characteristics that satisfy the criteria for the policies appropriate for the present data object. In particular, if there is presently no logical device that is appropriate for use in storing the present data object, the intelligent data storage manager defines a new logical device using existing physical and/or logical device definitions as component building blocks to provide the appropriate characteristics to satisfy the policy requirements. The intelligent data storage manager uses weighted values that are assigned to each of the presently defined logical devices to produce a best fit solution to the requested policies in an n-dimensional best fit matching algorithm. The resulting logical device definition is then implemented by dynamically interconnecting the logical devices that were used as the components of the newly defined logical device to store the data object.

摘要: The automated library system contains multiple independent robots for concurrently manipulating multiple media cartridges. The library system comprises a two-dimensional array that contains media cartridge storage cells and media cartridge players. A system of rails is used to guide robotic pods through all of the locations in the array, which eliminates the need for any steering or guide mechanism on board the robotic pods, resulting in a reduction in the mass of the robotic pods. The rail system also constrains the movement of the robotic pods into horizontal and vertical movements, thereby simplifying the control algorithms for collision avoidance that are required by a typical random moveable object handling system based on horizontal, vertical and diagonal degrees of freedom. The robotic pods contain a moveable carriage that is capable of transporting robotic components, such as media cartridge pickers, bar code reading devices, and other task oriented sub-modules, in the storage library rail system.

摘要: A dual active element magnetoresistive tape read head uses weak biasing of active layers to reduce Barkhausen noise. The read head includes a first insulator layer. A first active magnetoresistive layer is built on the first insulator layer. A second insulator layer is built on the first active magnetoresistive layer. A second active magnetoresistive layer is on the second insulator layer. The second active magnetoresistive layer is magnetostatically coupled to the first active magnetoresistive layer. A third insulator layer is on the second active magnetoresistive layer. At least one insulator layer is a biasing layer comprised of an electrically nonconductive antiferromagnetic material.

摘要: A tape cartridge, a cartridge-drive system, and a method of operation for aligning spools inside the tape cartridge with fixed center drives. The spools are allowed to slide relative to a baseplate allowing them to move in a direction normal to their axis of rotation to account for axial misalignment with the fixed center drives. Posts maintain the spools in close proximity to the baseplate. The fixed center drives have a flexible joint to account for angular misalignments of the spool and drive axes, and to account for spool-to-drive distance variations along the axis of rotation. Each spool and drive have a ring of triangular shaped teeth that self-align when engaged. Thrust bearings may be disposed between the spools and the baseplate to minimize friction. Each spool may include a normally engaged locking clutch mechanism to reduce the possibility of tape spillage during handling. The clutch is disengaged by engagement with an annular boss on the drive.
