Abstract:
In a single-frequency precision guidance landing system, the use of a DME interrogator in the aircraft and a DME receiver at the ground installation, each tuned to the same DME channel frequency, to uniquely interrogate a selected ground station and hence identify it by virtue of its replies being synchronous in the aircraft with the interrogations, the interrogations and the replies also being used to obtain range to the ground installation. This technique uses airborne already-installed DME interrogators for selective interrogation of a desired landing installation, thereby to eliminate any need to add additional special purpose equipment to the aircraft to accomplish the desired uniqueness of interrogation and ground installation identification achieved by this invention.
Abstract:
In order to provide timely aircraft performance data from an aircraft flight data recorder in a useful format, a flight data display system is provided: with a data storage unit; an interface circuit for reformatting flight data from the flight data recorder; a central processor for converting selected portions of the reformatted data into engineering units and storing the converted data into the storage unit; and a video display unit including a keyboard for selecting the desired portions of the reformatted flight data for display on the video display unit. The video display unit provides for the multicolor display of flight data in either graphical form or in a cockpit instrument form on a cathode ray tube.
Abstract:
A warning system for providing an aural warning to the pilot of a rotary wing aircraft monitors the altitude above ground and barometric descent rate of the aircraft and generates the warning if the descent rate of the aircraft is excessive for the altitude at which the aircraft is flying. The system provides two distinct warnings, one being an early warning advising the pilot of a hazardous condition, and the other being a warning alerting the pilot of imminent danger. The system also includes tactical and non-tactical modes of operation, wherein the warning criteria are adjusted to meet tactical and non-tactical flight conditions.
Abstract:
A transducer for sensing the angular position or rate of change of displacement of a housing of a borehole survey instrument with respect to a reference position includes a rotor magnetically suspended within a stator which is in turn secured to the housing. The rotor is constrained by the magnetic suspension to rotate about a single axis relative to the stator. A frame of reference is established for the transducer, against which subsequent measurements are compared. Optical sensing means are included for sensing the movement of the rotor about the axis of motion to develop an indication of the angular position or rate of change of position of the housing.
Abstract:
In order to provide for substantially reduced costs in acceptance testing of aircraft computers, the acceptance test system described herein includes: a group of input circuits for receiving the computer output data signals; an input circuit adapted to receive signals from the aircraft computer representing the computer input data signals; and a transmitter for transmitting the computer input data to the computer. In this automatic acceptance test system, the computer under test generates both serial and parallel input data signals for itself which are then retransmitted to the computer under test by the automatic test system.

A digital symbol generator for developing analog deflection voltages to drive a cathode ray tube display forming a plurality of symbols from successive blanked and unblanked vectors rotatable about an arbitrary angle of rotation. Each vector is specified by a binary representation of its polar coordinates including vector angle and length, rotation being accomplished by digital addition of the vector angle and angle of rotation. A line length counter generates a pulse train the number of pulses of which is proportional to vector length and the frequency of which is greater for blanked vectors than for unblanked vectors so that blanked vectors are drawn at a faster rate. Symbol error checking is accomplished by a vector closure technique wherein the symbology end point is measured at the output of the symbol generator and compared with the independently calculated true end point.
Abstract:
A flexure in a force transducer, as an inertial guidance accelerometer, for securing a force sensitive element to a mounting base includes one or more flexure sections having one or more recessed surfaces which are substantially coincident with the neutral bending plane of the flexure. Electrically conductive coating on the recessed surfaces provide electrical connections to components located on the force sensitive element. The conductive coatings on or near the neutral bending plane of the flexure sections minimizes bending moments caused by stresses set up between the conductive coatings and the flexure which may in turn lead to bias errors. At the same time, the flexure configuration provides for the desired strength and spring rate for the force sensitive element.

In an assembly, for use in transducer type instruments such as accelerometers, having a position sensing movable member including a pick-off element, wherein the movable member is secured to a support member by a flexure or hinge and the support member in turn is cantilevered between two stator members, instrument bias errors resulting from the securing of the non-cantilevered portion of the support member between the stator members can be reduced by aligning the edges of the surfaces of the stators that contact the support member with the centroid of the pick-off element so that the axis of cantilever rotation passes through the centroid of the pick-off area. In transducers having electrical leads on the movable member, the flexure and the support member for electrically connecting the pick-off element to the support member, bias errors can be further reduced by including the area of the electrical leads in calculating the centroid.
Abstract:
An improved capacitive pick-off circuit is provided by utilizing a reference current generator to apply a square wave to a pick-off capacitor and the resulting voltage across the capacitor is then applied to a fixed capacitor. The resulting fixed capacitor current then provides a measure of the capacitance of the pick-off capacitor. A differential capacitive pick-off circuit is provided by applying the reference current to each pick-off capacitor and providing a fixed capacitor for each of the pick-off capacitors. The resulting fixed capacitor currents are combined and the resulting differential current is used as a measure of the difference in capacitance or the difference in the gaps between the plates of the capacitors.
