    Abstract: A pre-engaged piston starter system of an automobile vehicle includes an engine having a flywheel to start the engine connected to the engine by an engine shaft. A starter motor provides rotational energy to a starter gear. A pinion gear transfers rotational energy of the starter gear to the flywheel. A solenoid is energized to shift the pinion gear to an engaged position between the flywheel and the starter gear. An auto-stop mode is entered when an engine speed is decreased below a calibrated threshold speed defining approximately 250 rpm. A calculated pinion pre-engagement engine speed allows engagement of the pinion gear when the engine speed is below the calibrated threshold speed.

    Abstract: A continuously variable transmission (CVT) comprises a shaft rotatable about an axis, and variator assembly, and an actuator mechanism. The variator assembly includes a pulley supported on the shaft and having a ramp surface, and an endless rotatable device frictionally engaged with the pulley. The ramp surface inclines in an axial direction along the axis toward the endless rotatable device. The CVT further comprises an actuator mechanism that includes a wedge component that has a wedge surface interfacing with the ramp surface, and a rotary piston operatively connected to the wedge component. The rotary piston defines a first fluid chamber pressurizable to apply a rotational force that provides relative motion between the ramp surface and the wedge surface resulting in a wedge force on the ramp surface and a clamping force of the endless rotatable device on the pulley.

    Abstract: A continuously variable transmission, a transmission control system, and a method is provided. The control system is configured to determine whether a predetermined condition is met for applying a clutch critical pressure to an applied clutch. The clutch critical pressure is less than line pressure and is a pressure at which the clutch may slip upon experiencing a predetermined torque disturbance level. The control system is configured to command the clutch critical pressure to be applied to the clutch if the predetermined condition is met. The control system is further configured to determine whether the clutch is slipping beyond a predetermined threshold, and if the clutch is slipping beyond the predetermined threshold, command a clutch slip control scheme to be applied to the clutch that is configured to bring a clutch slip of the clutch under the predetermined threshold.

    Abstract: A mechanical diode to transfer torque between a first torque member and a second torque member is described, and includes a first race element, a second race element and a slide plate that are coaxially disposed in the housing. The slide plate includes a tab element projecting radially outwardly. The slide plate is rotatable to one of a first position and a second position. A spring element is disposed between the slide plate and one of the first and second race elements, and is configured to urge the slide plate to the first position. A controllable braking element is disposed to apply a braking force to the tab element of the slide plate to urge the slide plate to achieve the second position in response to a control signal.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a hydrokinetic torque converter (TC) with a TC housing. An impeller is disposed within the TC housing and connects to an engine output shaft. A turbine is disposed within the TC housing and connects to a transmission input shaft via a TC output shaft. A torque converter clutch (TCC), which is disposed within the TC housing and coupled to the TC output shaft, selectively locks the impeller to the TC output shaft. A damper, which is disposed within the TC housing and coupled to the TCC, dampens vibrations transmitted by the TCC. A disconnect device, which is disposed within the TC housing and coupled to the damper assembly and TC output shaft, connects the turbine to the TC output shaft or damper when positive torque is being transferred, and disconnects the turbine and TC output shaft or damper when negative torque is being transferred.

    Abstract: A transmission variator includes a first pulley rotatably attached to an intermediate member of a geartrain, and a second pulley rotatably attached to an output member that is rotatably coupled to the driveline. The geartrain includes an input member, a planetary gear set, a first clutch, a second clutch and an intermediate member. The second clutch is a low drag clutch. The input member rotatably couples to the prime mover. A controller includes an instruction set that is executable to activate only the first clutch in response to a request to operate the driveline in a forward direction, and activate only the second clutch in response to a request to operate the driveline in a reverse direction.
