Abstract: Examples described herein provide a method that includes receiving, at a vehicle comprising a first battery pack and a second battery pack, at least one of a first electric charge from a first charging station via a first charging port or a second electric charge from a second charging station via a second charging port. The method further includes determining, by a controller of the vehicle, a charging mode of the vehicle. The charging mode is selected from a group consisting of a dynamic balancing during independent multi-port charging mode, a dynamic balancing during independent port charging mode, or a dynamic balancing during parallel charging mode. The method further includes configuring, by the controller of the vehicle, a plurality of switches of a rechargeable energy storage system of the vehicle based at least in part on the determined charging mode.

Abstract: A method of controlling an electric motor of a vehicle includes monitoring torque command signals from a vehicle system to the electric motor, each torque command signal configured to cause the electric motor to output a commanded torque, and monitoring a speed of the vehicle and an output torque of the electric motor, the output torque responsive to a drive signal generated based on the torque command signals. The method also includes, based on the output torque and the vehicle speed indicating a low motor efficiency condition, modulating the drive signal between a first torque value and a second torque value that is less than the first torque value, the first torque value greater than the commanded torque and selected to increase an efficiency of the electric motor.

Abstract: A method for controlling an electric drive unit (EDU) having a motor-driven torque converter includes receiving a request signal indicative of a requested output torque of the EDU, and operating the motor at a target motor speed using the requested output torque. The target motor speed minimizes system losses while achieving the requested output torque. When the requested output torque remains below a calibrated threshold and a turbine speed is less than a corner speed of the motor, a torque converter clutch (TCC) transitions to or remains in a locked state. The controller commands the TCC to transition to an unlocked state to reach the target motor speed, thereby selectively enabling torque multiplication. A powertrain system includes a driven load and the EDU. A computer readable storage medium may include executable instructions for performing the method.

Abstract: A hybrid powertrain system includes an electric machine, a torque converter, a transmission, a hydraulic pump, and a controller, and it is arranged to transfer mechanical power to a driveline. The torque converter includes a clutch, a pump, and a turbine, and the electric machine is rotatably coupled to the hydraulic pump and to the torque converter pump. The hydraulic pump is fluidly connected to the transmission, and the controller is operably connected to the electric machine and the torque converter clutch. The controller is executable to determine an operator command, and control the electric machine to spin the hydraulic pump in a speed control mode and control the torque converter clutch in an open state. Upon achieving a desired minimum pump speed, the torque converter clutch is applied in a slip state and the electric machine is controlled in response to the operator command.

Example methods may include providing a powertrain for the vehicle, which includes an internal combustion engine configured to provide rotational power to a rotatable input of a transmission by way of a starting device, and an electric motor-generator comprising a rotor configured to selectively provide rotational power to the rotatable input. The method may further include selectively disconnecting the engine from the rotatable input using a disconnect device separate from the starting device, thereby allowing the rotatable input of the transmission to be driven at a speed faster than an output speed of the engine.

Abstract: Presented are engine-disconnect clutches with attendant control logic, methods for making/operating such disconnect clutches, and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) equipped with an engine that is coupled to/decoupled from a transmission and electric motor via a disconnect clutch. A representative method for controlling an HEV powertrain includes receiving an HEV powertrain operation command, then determining a clutch mode of a multi-mode clutch device to execute the HEV powertrain operation. This multi-mode clutch device is operable in: a lock-lock mode, in which the clutch device transmits torque to and from the engine; a free-free mode, in which the clutch device disconnects the engine's output member from the transmission's input member, preventing torque transmission to and from the engine; a lock-free mode, in which the clutch device transmits torque from but not to the engine; and, a free-lock mode, in which the clutch device transmits torque to but not from the engine.

Abstract: An IPM electric machine includes a rotor, rotor shaft stator, and permanent magnets. The rotor includes rare earth permanent magnets disposed within pockets. The rotor, the pockets and the permanent magnets conform to a first set of geometric design parameters. The stator includes radially-inwardly projecting teeth that form slots between pairs of the teeth. Electrical windings are disposed within slots of the laminate stack. The teeth and slots conform to a second set of geometric design parameters. The quantity of slots is between 60 and 96, the quantity of electrical poles is between 6 and 12, the quantity of electrical phases is between 3 and 6 and the electrical windings include a quantity of turns per phase that is between 8 and 20. A ratio of an outer diameter of the stator to an active length of the rotor is between 2 and 3.5.

Abstract: A vehicle propulsion system includes an engine and a first electric machine each configured to selectively provide torque to propel the vehicle. A second electric machine is coupled to the engine to provide torque to start the engine from an inactive state. A high-voltage power source is configured to power both of the first electric machine and the second electric machine over a high-voltage bus. A propulsion controller is programmed to start the engine using cranking torque output from the second electric machine powered by the high-voltage power source. The controller is also programmed to operate both of the first electric machine and the combustion engine to propel the vehicle in response to an acceleration demand greater than a threshold. The controller is further programmed to decouple the engine and propel the vehicle using the first electric machine in response to vehicle speed less than a speed threshold.

Abstract: A drivetrain system for a vehicle is described, and includes an internal combustion engine, a geartrain, an electric machine, a power take-off unit, and a driveline. The internal combustion engine is coupled to the geartrain via a disconnect clutch and a torque converter. The geartrain includes a transmission and a differential gearset, including an output member of the transmission coupled to an input member of the differential gearset. The input member of the differential gearset is coupled to a rotor of the electric machine and the power take-off unit. The differential gearset is coupled to first and second intermediate driveshaft members of the driveline to transfer propulsion power to vehicle wheels that are arranged in a front-wheel configuration.
