    摘要: A system architecture for bypassing a local exchange carrier comprises an intelligent terminal, a residential gateway coupled to the terminal, a cable facility management platform terminating a twisted pair or coaxial cable facility and a network service platform. The platform serves both a cable headend and a telephone DSL network to enable a single service provider to provide different information content services independent of how a user actually receives the services. The twisted pair and/or coaxial cable fed, integrated residence gateway controlled intelligent terminal or set-top device provides a multiple menu heirarchy for selecting a plurality of enhanced services. The menus are implemented on a video telephone or similar device with a touch-sensitive screen display for interactively displaying video and accompanying audio signals and menu screens. The integrated residence gateway is coupled to either or both of the coaxial cable or twisted pair and distributes the bandwidth facilities available over either service vehicle to customer devices including the set top box.

    摘要: A subscriber link to a central office which employs data compression, forward error correction, and advanced modulation techniques and to connect subscribers to multiple communications networks to provide an array of services. A device provides normal telephone service in the event of an equipment failure. At the subscriber end, a server called an intelligent services director (ISD) provides multiple independent connections for telephones which ordinarily connect to multiple access virtual circuits generated on the subscriber link over a twisted pair. A device called a facilities management platform (FMP) at the central office end of the link, among other things, provides interfacing of the subscriber link to various networks including a digital subscriber loop (DLC) and packet switched networks. Ordinarily telephones connected to the ISD require power and correctly functioning modems and controllers in the ISD and the FMP to have access to the outside world. A fail-safe mechanism, however allows at least one chosen phone to function in the event of a failure. The chosen phone must be capable of pulse or DTMF dialing. The connection through which it operate can be switched directly to the twisted pair media connecting to the FMP. At the FMP, the twisted pair is switched to tie the connection directly to a line card of the DLC. Alternatively, the ISD contains an interface to a specialized phone designed for the ISD environment. The interface provides the appearance to the DLC of a regular POT.

    摘要: A dynamic bandwidth allocation system is used to optimize the transmission of traffic on the twisted pair connecting the customer premises equipment with the local office. As demand for simultaneous traffic at the customer premises equipment increases, the requirement for multiple twisted pair lines is minimized by dynamically allocating the bandwidth of the channel and sharing that bandwidth with multiple, simultaneous services. Additional efficiencies for simultaneous transmission of traffic can be achieved by directing all traffic to occupy a smaller channel. This might slightly affect the quality of some services but in many cases the impact will be minimal. Voice signals will be allowed to decrease to a predetermined level and facsimile or other data traffic will transmit at a slower transmission rate. At some predetermined level, traffic quality will degrade to a level such that service will be unacceptable. At this point, a prioritization scheme will buffer certain traffic at the intelligent services director (terminal block) or the facilities management platform (access module). New requests for services are denied until the required bandwidth is free. Once the required bandwidth becomes available, buffered traffic is allowed to transmit or receive will flow again and service availability will resume. An alternative scheme employs allows all services to maintain their highest quality and ranks all traffic by a priority scheme. Once the allocated bandwidth is occupied, the priority scheme discontinues or buffers lower ranking traffic. Once bandwidth resources are released by the higher ranking traffic, the lower ranking traffic is allowed to proceed if the information was buffered. By optimizing the traffic on the twisted pair, requirements for the installation of multiple twisted pairs is minimized as services are added by the user.

    摘要: An apparatus and method synchronizes a communication frame of a newly added base station, in a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) communication network, to communication frames in the existing communication network of base stations by operating the newly added base station to receive down link signals of a neighboring active base station and synchronize its receive slot in the communication frame with a corresponding forward time slot of the communication frame of that base station. The receive time slot of the newly added base station is shifted by an offset reference time to establish it own forward time slot. The offset reference time is determined by the time interval required for the base station to change from a forward to a reverse channel.
