The universal platform for the SDR of the present invention employs the direct conversion approach with the n-port MMIC followed by reconfigurable reprogrammable devices such as DSP's or FPGA's. The universal platform is based on the linear operation of the devices. Thus, the DC offset problem may be solved. It is also possible to support very wide bandwidths compared with conventional I/Q receivers. Therefore, the present universal platform is suitable for multimode and multiband communications.

A demodulator for modulated RF signals comprises a passive four port structure (1). The four port structure (1) has a first input (3) for supplying a modulated RF signal to be demodulated. A second input (2) is supplied with a RF signal from a local oscillator (21). Two output terminals are connected to power sensors (4, 5). The RF signal from the local oscillator (21) is supplied to the second input (3) of the four port structure (1) without being RF switched by an RF switch. The demodulator is particularly useful for modulation schemes with a finite number of magnitude states (nQAM modulation).

A digital servo system for use in an optical recording/reproducing apparatus equipped with an optical system for illuminating an optical recording medium with a light beam to record and reproduce an information signal on and from the optical recording medium, the servo system being for more accurately performing a tracking and focusing control of the light beam with respect to the optical recording medium. The servo system is provided with a plurality of photodetectors to obtain a servo error signal which is in turn supplied to an attenuator and then supplied to an analog-to-digital converter to be digitized so as to constitute a digital filter. The servo system is arranged so as to set the attenuation factor of the attenuator so that the input signal of the analog-to-digital converter is kept in a predetermined range. This permits the tracking and focusing control with a high precision and further allows an AGC amplifier having a high-speed automatic gain-controllable function to be arranged to be digitally controllable.
