An apparatus and method for circuit mode resource allocation in a Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) system is disclosed. The method includes generating a first resource allocation message which comprises currently used slot bitmap information with respect to a circuit mode region in a frame; allocating resources to one or more terminals with respect to currently unused slots in the circuit mode region according to the currently used slot bitmap information; and generating a second resource allocation message which comprises information relating to the resource allocation. Thus, the effective circuit mode resource allocation can be achieved without holes in the circuit mode, while maintaining backward compatibility with the existing standards.

A communication method includes broadcasting, by a Base Station (BS), a neighbor advertisement message including neighbor cell information through each Frequency Allocation (FA); analyzing the neighbor cell advertise message by a plurality of Media Access Control (MAC) processors of an Mobile Station (MS) to obtain FA configuration information of each neighbor cell; independently determining handover by the MAC processors of the MS; generating the start of handover by one MAC which first determines handover; and determining a handover target by the remaining MAC processors so that handover is performed to different FAs of the same BS of the MAC processor which generates the start of handover by using the FA configuration information of each neighbor cell.

An apparatus and method for supporting different frame structures in a broadband wireless communication system are provided. A communication method of a Base Station (BS) includes determining a frame structure to be provided. A MAP message including an indicator that indicates a new standard is generated, when the provided frame structure conforms to the new standard. The generated MAP message is transmitted by performing physical layer encoding thereon. Accordingly, signaling is defined to report a currently provided frame structure to an MS, and thus, a system can support different frame structures.

Radio resource allocation apparatus and method in a multi-channel system are provided. The method includes determining a type of a channel to be allocated to terminals, which request a resource allocation. When there is a terminal to be assigned the band AMC channel, necessary resources are allocated to the terminal as resources of the band AMC channel within a frequency band preferred by the terminal. A virtual resource space is generated which collects resources not allocated as the resources of the band AMC channel. Resources are allocated to terminals to be assigned the diversity channel from within the virtual resource space. Accordingly, the radio resources can be efficiently allocated in the multi-channel system where the diversity channel and the band AMC channel coexist.

A method for controlling a sleep-mode operation in a communication system is provided, in which a Mobile Station (MS) transitions to an awake state in a listening interval of the sleep mode, performs one of a first operation, a second operation, and a third operation in the awake state, and transitions to a sleep state if the MS determines that there is no data to transmit to a BS and no data to receive from the Base Station (BS) after the one operation is performed. The first operation is for receiving data from the BS, the second operation is for transmitting data to the BS, and the third operation is receiving data from the BS and transmitting data to the BS.

In the BWA system for transmitting and receiving a super frame including one or more sub-frames, a base station includes a first generator for generating resource allocation information on a circuit service and a transmitter for transmitting the resource allocation information provided from the first generator in a first part of the super frame. Accordingly, for a service (e.g., VoIP service) in which resources have to be periodically allocated, resource allocation information is transmitted during each main period (i.e., super frame), and thus there is an advantage in that the size of control information can be significantly reduced.
