    Abstract: An investment casting method involves producing a casting shell by applying a hardenable refractory material to a sacrificial pattern.     Abstract: The present invention is a process and apparatus for forming various bio-products from cellulosic plant material. The plant material is subjected to a pulping step in which lignin is extracted from the material by an aqueous lignin solvent to form a lignin-solvent mixture and purified cellulose. The lignin-solvent mixture can be separated from the water to form a high energy density fuel that can be used independently or combined with biodiesel. The purified cellulose can be used in conventional processes, e.g., paper making, or can be converted to fermentable sugars with a cellulase enzyme to produce other bio-products depending on the operating conditions of the fermenter. The bio-products produced by the fermenter can include the solvent that may be recycled for use in extracting the lignin.

    Abstract: A composition and method for forming investment casting shells includes using colloidal silica, zircon flour, and fused silica in a slurry which is applied to a pattern. After the slurry is applied to the pattern, it is allowed to partially or completely solidify. After the shell has solidified, the pattern may be melted or otherwise removed. A molten material is introduced into the shell and allowed to cool to form an article. Finally, the shell is broken away or otherwise removed from the article. The improved shell slurry composition and corresponding method minimizes pattern-to-pour cycle times and is environmentally friendly.

    Abstract: A three-dimensional (3D) printer system includes a nozzle that can passively align fibers being deposited with resin while creating fiber-reinforced composite components. The nozzle may include a nozzle body with main bore that directs material axially through a nozzle body, toward an alignment duct that provides the nozzle's outlet. The alignment duct may provide a passage in which the fibers are urged into a different orientation aligns the fibers generally parallel to each other in a different direction than the axial flow direction through the nozzle. The alignment duct's passage may be radially asymmetric, such as a tapering rectangular slot(s), which may provide guide surfaces to impart the reorientation of the flowing fibers.
