Abstract:
A method and apparatus for cleaning filter media in dewatering apparatus in situ includes an applicator which sprays a mixture of water and a cleaning agent onto a filter media as the applicator and media undergo relative movement. The cleaning solution contains selected oxidizers and dispersants to break the polymer bond and remove polymeric residues from the media without the need for removing the media from the apparatus.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a procedure for cleaning a sinter used for filtering a metal catalyst suspension. As taught by the invention, the sinter is treated with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide for displacing the metal catalyst left in the pores of the sinter with the aid of the gas produced by the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide, caused by the metal catalyst, until gas formation ceases, indicating that no significant quantities of metal catalysts are left in the sinter. Such hydrogen peroxide decomposition is produced by the so-called anthraquinone process, in which an anthraquinone derivative is dissolved in an organic solvent then reduced with the aid of hydrogen gas in the presence of a catalyst to the corresponding anthraquinone derivative; the catalyst is then separated from such solution by filtering. Then, such corresponding anthraquinone derivative is oxidized with air or oxygen, whereby it reverses to the state preceding hydrogenation, i.e., to the original anthrquinone derivative, while at the same time producing hydrogen peroxide.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for clarifying liquids, especially water, of the two stage upflow/downflow type that operate in a filtering mode, a first stage flush mode and a bistage backwash mode are improved by the use in the first, upflow stage of particulate filter media consisting of solid particles with a specific gravity of between 3.5 and 4.4 and a size between 1.5 and 4 mm. and, preferably, in the second, downflow stage particulate filter media consisting of solid particles having a specific gravity of between 1.5 and 4.0 and sizes of between 0.3 and 1.5 mm and providing for upward passage of gas bubbles through the first stage media particles without appreciable expansion thereof during at least part of each flush and backwash mode of operation.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process and a device for selectively separating the solvents employed in the preparation and purification of products. In this connection the different solvents are removed from the product to be treated by means of mechanical separation and subsequent admission of steam, and are collected separately. As a result of this, mixing of solvents from the preparation and from the purification is avoided, so that the working up of a solvent mixture is superfluous. The proces and the device are preferably used in the process for producing starch ethers and cellulose ethers.
Abstract:
A process and apparatus for the separation and purification of cellulose ethers and other cellulose derivatives in a filter unit at relatively high temperatures and with narrow-mesh filters, employing a pressure vessel having candle filters to which pressure is introduced for separation of the suspension liquid, for the removal of residual liquid from the filter cake formed, and also for washing the filter cake.
Abstract:
Method in a suction dryer (10), which comprises a basin (12) for a suspension to be suction-dried, in connection with which basin one or several filter-plate discs (14a) revolve, onto whose faces a filtrate cake is gathered and dewatered by the effect of a suction flow passing through the filter plates (14a), the said filtrate cake/cakes being scraped or otherwise detached from the faces of the filter plates (14a). For the purpose of cleaning the porous structure and faces of the filter plates (14a), an ultrasonic detector or detectors (30) are provided in connection with the basin (12) for the suspension to be filtered, to which detectors an electric power of ultrasonic frequency is fed from an ultrasonic generator (32). For the time of the cleaning intensified by ultrasound, the suspension basin (12) is filled with a connecting and cleaning liquid, e.g. water. The filter-plate discs (14) are rotated in the connecting and cleaning liquid by means of the same equipment (14, 13, 18) by means of which the rotating of the filter-plate discs (14) takes place in connection with the suction drying.
Abstract:
An improved method for reclaiming waste printing ink is provided that requires no dilution nor blending with virgin ink wherein substantially all entrained water and solvent contamination is removed in a vacuum distillation step. Solid impurities are removed via a subsequent filtration method that leaves the ink's pigment content substantially undiminished.
Abstract:
A method of removing solid particles, especially magnesium compounds, from the pores of the filter element of a tube pressure filter, by (A) washing the filter element whilst supported in the tube pressure filter with an aqueous cleaning solution containing a compound which reacts with the solid particles in the pores of the filter element to form a material which is at least partially soluble in said aqueous cleaning solution, and thereafter (B) washing the filter element whilst supported in the tube pressure filter with water or an aqueous solution of a soap or a detergent.
