Abstract:
A non-aqueous fluorescent ink composition suitable for use in writing instruments is described comprising a fluorescent pigment dispersion and a high boiling point organic solvent. The ink composition may also include resins, plasticizers, antiskinning agents, lubricants and stabilizers. The fluorescent ink composition exhibits a brilliant appearance in masscolor and when written on paper.
Abstract:
An ink composition or system for writing instruments constructed with a polyester fiber reservoir and a porous oriented fiber nib. This ink system will write on both black and white surfaces. On black surfaces, it will reveal itself as being opaque and metallic almost iridescent in appearance. On white surfaces, a tint of color is observed with distinct flecks of silver. The ink system is composted of water as a carrier, a permanent water-based binder, a colored pigmented permanent water-based dispersion of sub-micron particle size, a unique aluminum dispersion of specific particle size in a special carrier, a humectant, a surfactant that lowers surface tension, an anti-settling additive, a preservative and a base acting as a pH adjuster.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a substrate having therein or thereon a composition containing, at least one molecular includant. In one embodiment, the molecular includant comprises a cyclodextrin. The present invention also relates to the substrate further comprising at least one ultraviolet radiation transorber and also to the substrate further comprising a colorant. Additionally, the present invention relates to a method of making the substrate in which a composition comprising a molecular includant is incorporated into or onto the substrate. In one embodiment of this invention, the substrate has thereon or therein a colored composition comprising a colorant and a molecular includant. In another embodiment, the colorant is a mutable colorant which, upon irradiation in the present of an ultraviolet radiation transorber, can be mutated.
Abstract:
In color printing, and in the fine arts, cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) color inks are known to possess much higher color saturation and brightness than conventional pigment and dyed based inks. However, prior art CLC ink formulations are inconvenient because in the liquid phase they have to be confined in cells, and in the solid phase, they have to be applied at high temperature, and have to be aligned by some means to produce the optimum color. This invention solves the problem encountered in the CLC prior art, by making pre-aligned CLC platelets or flakes of appropriate thickness and size and mixing them in appropriate host fluids producing a novel CLC ink which can be applied at room temperature and without the need for alignment. The new pre-aligned room temperature CLC ink can be used as a substitute for conventional inks in almost all printing and plotting, and manual drawing and painting. Using the notch filter CLC platelets, the brightness is further enhanced. This invention teaches the CLC ink concepts, its applications and method of manufacturing.

Abstract:
An improved ink suitable for ink jet printing comprising, a mixture of a colorant, an arylketoalkene stabilizing compound or a photoreactor, and a liquid vehicle, wherein the colorant is light-stable. When the photoreactor is combined with a wavelength-selective sensitizer to form a radiation transorber, the colorant is mutable upon exposure of the radiation transorber to specific, narrow bandwidth radiation. The colored composition may also contain a molecular includant having a chemical structure which defines at least one cavity wherein each of the colorant and photoreactor or radiation transorber is associated with the molecular includant. The invention also includes ink jet print cartridges containing the improved ink, ink jet printers containing the improved ink and methods of printing using the improved ink.
Abstract:
A method of changing the color of an ink mark includes applying an ink including a solvent and a triarylmethane dye dissolved in the solvent that changes color if contacted with a chemical agent to a substrate. The dye is soluble in phenyl cellosolve. A chemical agent is then applied to cause the dye to change color.
Abstract:
A reaction for eliminating a functional group alpha to a carbonyl group. The reaction can be used to dehydrate a compound having an alcohol group alpha to a carbonyl group by reacting the compound in a non-aqueous non-polar solvent in the presence of an effective amount of a transition metal salt, such as zinc chloride, such that the alcohol group is dehydrated. This Nohr-MacDonald Elimination Reaction produces a light stable compound, which can be added to compositions for light stabilization of a colorant. The modified compound may be combined with a wave-length selective sensitizer.
Abstract:
A method for producing oxidation-treated carbon black, which comprises oxidizing carbon black by ozone in the presence of water until the total amount of acid groups of the carbon black becomes at least 3 .mu.equ/m.sup.2.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an aqueous pigment ink composition comprising at least water and carbon black, wherein a surface oxygen content of said carbon black is not less than 0.07 in atom-numeral ratio based on carbon atom measured by an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic method, and a combined value of a surface carboxyl group carbon content and a surface hydroxyl group carbon content of said carbon black, the both being measured by an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic method, is not less than 0.5%. The aqueous pigment ink composition realizes smooth printing with an ink jet nozzle, and smooth writing with a fine pen tip and it has sufficient density. Further, the recorded traces obtained by using the ink composition is excellent in water resistance.
