A fiber conditioning composition, which is preferably a shampoo for human hair, in stable and pearlescent liquid or semi-liquid or gel condition, is an emulsion or dispersion which includes a surfactant, a water insoluble fiber conditioning agent, a long chain saturated primary alcohol or derivative thereof, which stabilizes the emulsion or suspension and makes it pearlescent, and an aqueous medium, which may also contain other components of such fiber conditioning and shampoo compositions. In the preferred shampoos an anionic detergent is present, which is preferably a mixture of higher fatty alcohol sulfate and higher fatty alcohol ethoxylate sulfate, the long chain saturated primary alcohol (or derivative) is of an average of 30 to 40 carbon atoms (ethoxylated such alcohols may also be employed, at least in part) and the water insoluble conditioning agent is a silicone (very preferably a certain type of aminosilicone), a polyethylene, a paraffin, an isoparaffin, a microcrystalline wax, a C.sub.18-36 (mixed) fatty acid or triglyceride, a higher fatty alcohol ester of a higher fatty acid (such as stearyl stearate), beeswax, or any mixture thereof, with the more preferred shampoos containing conditioning agents which include the aminosilicone in mixture with one or more of the polyethylene, microcrystalline wax, petrolatum, paraffin and isoparaffin, plus a cationic hair conditioning agent, which is preferably a quaternary ammonium salt. The disclosed invention also includes processes in which the compositions are used to condition or to clean and condition fibrous materials, such as human hair on the head.

A preferred formulation incorporates a three component mixture: an anionic surfactant, a nonionic surfactant, and an amido amine oxide to provide a detergent having good detergency performance and foam stability over a range of water hardness levels. Another preferred formulation incorporates a three component mixture: an anionic surfactant, a nonionic surfactant, and an alkyl ethoxylated carboxylate to provide a detergent having good detergency performance and foam stability at high hardness levels.

The novel surfactant compositions are obtained by mixing 1 part by weight of at least one nonionic surfactant and 0.3 to 9 parts by weight of a specific mixture composed of water and at least one anionic surfactant and at least one cationic surfactant. The said surfactant compositions are concentrated and generally clear liquids which, in particular, have good foaming and wetting characteristics, low surface tension and a low pour point and are versatile by virtue of these particular properties.

A method of making said composition comprising the steps of neutralizing alylbenzene sulfonic acid with magnesium hydroxide to a pH of about 1.5 and thereafter adding sodium hydroxide to increase the pH to the range of 5 to 7, neutralizing the alkyl ethenoxy ether sulfuric acid with a mixture of triethanolamine and ammonium hydroxide, admixing the sulfonate salt with the sulfate salt and thereafter adding said alkanoic acid alkanolamide in liquid form with agitation to form a homogeneous liquid detergent composition. Also described is a method of cleaning articles having oily or greasy soil on a metal or glazed surface comprising contacting said soiled article with water having dissolved therein from 0.5% to 5% by weight of the subject light duty liquid detergent composition.
