The frequency-control unit includes a filter unit with a controllable filter parameter, which is configured to derive, using the filter parameter, from a frequency-error signal a frequency-control signal for minimizing the frequency error of the reference frequency; and a correlation unit, which is configured to determine from frequency errors of the reference frequency at different points in time a correlation measure indicative of a correlation between the frequency errors at the different points in time. The frequency-control unit is configured to adapt the controllable filter parameter of the filter unit in dependence on the determined correlation measure. The value of the filter parameter can depend also on a receiver path strength, such as an RSCP value.

The method the no comprises finding a series of results, with a result from each of a plurality of the synchronization searches, for which the difference in; timing offset between results from adjacent searches in the series is within a maximum specified value. The method includes executing Hermitian transpose on channel coefficient matrix of the MIMO OFDM communications system for generating Hermitian-transposed channel coefficient matrix, multiplying received signal matrix of the receiver with the Hermitian-transposed channel coefficient matrix for generating converted signals, summing products of the converted signals and complex conjugates of pilot signals corresponding to the converted signals for generating a sum result, and generating the phase error according to the sum result, the converted signals, and the complex conjugates of the pilot signals. The pilot signals are extracted from the received signal matrix.

A carrier and symbol timing recovery apparatus usable in a VSB (Vestigial Side Band) receiver, and a method thereof. For a carrier and symbol timing recovery, error information is detected using a pilot signal, an upper sideband and a lower sideband of a received signal. Each of the detected error information is multiplied by a predetermined weight, respectively, and the results of the respective multiplications are added/combined. Therefore, even though the pilot signal may be corrupted, the carrier recovery can nevertheless be accurately performed. Additionally, even though the upper sideband of a received VSB-modulated signal may be corrupted, the lower sideband can be utilized to perform the symbol timing recovery. As a result, performance of a receiving system can be improved even under unfavorable channel characteristics. Moreover, since the carrier recovery and the symbol timing recovery are executed through a single apparatus, it becomes possible to simplify a hardware implementation thereof.
