A method of converting an original FCC unit of side by side configuration to a converted FCC unit for processing light feedstock by replacing an regenerator in the original FCC unit with an embodied regenerator. From the original FCC unit, the air supply assembly is removed and a centerwell is installed with a fluidization gas, fuel, and air inlet(s) through the centerwell. Distribution rings are connected to each of fluidization gas and fuel inlet(s). An internal pipe and a standpipe portion are installed, wherein a lower end of the standpipe extends into the centerwell creating a radial slot, and wherein the lower end of the standpipe is spaced above the deflector plate in the centerwell to allow flow of spent catalyst through the standpipe and provide deflection of the spent catalyst flow for mixing the spent catalyst with fuel oil that is vaporized within the centerwell.

More particularly, a liquid petroleum feed is atomized with an atomization apparatus in which the apparatus has an orifice that produces a generally flat spray pattern of finely dispersed feed prior to contacting catalyst in a fluid catalytic cracking zone. The orifice has a general aspect ratio greater than 1.0 and a ratio of perimeter length-to-cross-sectional area greater than 1.5 relative to a perimeter-to-cross-sectional area ratio of a circular orifice of equivalent area. The apparatus can be used to atomize feed injected into the cracking zone of a fluid catalytic cracker.

A dual riser FCC process is disclosed wherein first and second hydrocarbon feeds (5, 6) are supplied to the respective first and second risers (2, 4) to make an effluent rich in ethylene, propylene and/or aromatics. Where the hydrocarbon feeds are different, the respective risers can have different conditions to favor conversion to ethylene and/or propylene. A minor amount of a coke precursor (80, 82) can be added to one or both of the hydrocarbon feeds (5, 6) to reduce or eliminate the amount of supplemental fuel needed to heat balance the system. The different feeds, including the coke precursor and any recycle streams (36, 44) can be segregated by type to improve olefin yields, including an embodiment where the paraffinic feeds are supplied to one riser and the olefinic feeds to the other.

The propylene production of a fluid catalytic cracking unit employing a large pore zeolite cracking catalyst, produces more propylene by adding a naphtha cracking riser and a medium pore zeolite catalytic component to the unit, and recycling at least a portion of the naphtha crackate to the naphtha riser. The large pore size zeolite preferably comprises a USY zeolite and the medium pore size is preferably ZSM-5. Propylene production per unit of naphtha feed to the naphtha riser is maximized, by using the 60–300° F. naphtha crackate as the feed.
