The reaction chamber 1 is provided with an entrance port 2 for introducing a gaseous reactant(s) in a continuous manner into the chamber 1 and an exit port 3 to enable the gaseous product(s) to leave the chamber 1 in a continuous manner. The reaction chamber 1 includes a plurality of catalyst segments (A)5, which has one void segment (B)6 on either side of it; and the reaction chamber 1 is made of a material(s) that is (are) suitable to resist a temperature of 700° C. or more.

The support grid is formed of (i) a center support cylinder, made in areas of a vertical cylinder, that is assembled within the vessel on the bottom closure head; (ii) a peripheral support skirt located at the outer circumference of the grid, assembled in sections inside the reactor pressure vessel, that sets without welding to bottom closure head of the reactor vessel; (iii) a set of radial support arms that extend from the center support structure to the support skirt to tie these sections into a rigid frame to support the catalyst bed support grid wedges; and (iv) a grid or disc formed of a plurality of catalyst bed support grid wedges or sections that are radial in orientation and are assembled inside the reactor pressure vessel to form a disc that is about 80% of the reactor vessel in outside diameter.

A reactor installation tool including a movable assembly and a fixed assembly linked together such that the movable assembly can be adjusted relative to the fixed assembly. The movable assembly including a reactor sleeve attachment means for releasably securing a reactor sleeve loaded with a reactor unit to the tool. The fixed assembly including an expandable clamping unit for releasably securing the tool to a reactor tube. A reactor unit can be installed in the reactor tube by adjusting the movable assembly to extract the reactor unit from the reactor sleeve as the fixed assembly is rigidly secured to the reactor tube. The fixed assembly can be released from the reactor tube and the reactor installation tool can be removed from the reactor tube.
