Abstract: In the one-way clutch of a torque converter, an outer race (30 in FIG. 10A) which is assembled on the inner circumferential side of a stator so as to be unrotatable includes a first side face (31) which is provided with first teeth (32). An inner race (40) which is mounted on a stationary shaft so as to be unrotatable includes a second side face (41) which is opposite to the first side face (31) and which is provided with second teeth (42). With the rotation of the outer race (30), the first teeth (32) and the second teeth (42) are engaged and disengaged by the functions of an intermediate member (50) which moves along inclined planes (33) formed in the first side face (31). Thus, shock noise are prevented during the release of the one-way clutch.

Abstract: A vehicle torque converter for forming a circulation path of an oil and transmitting a rotary torque is provided which includes an impeller, turbine and stator, each having a plurality of blades. Each blade of the stator is divided into a radially inner half portion and a radially outer half portion in a radial direction of the circulation path. The radially inner half portion has a front edge that is set back from a front edge of the radially outer portion, and is inclined with respect to a direction of a rotation axis of the torque converter by a larger angle than the radially outer half portion.

Abstract: A one-way clutch includes an outer ring 8, an inner ring 9 and a plurality of clutch members 10 interposed between the outer and inner rings 8 and 9. The present invention provides a one-way clutch mounting structure by having the outer ring of one-way clutch mounted in a housing, which may be a part of stator 5 of a torque converter 2. In accordance with the present invention, the housing has an annular section and a side section which together define a pocket in which the outer ring 8 is mounted. The outer ring 8 has an outer peripheral surface formed with a spiral groove 8c and the annular section of the housing partly extends into the spiral groove 8c when casted.

Abstract: A lock-up clutch control method controls a torque converter comprising an input shaft through which a rotating force from an engine is input, an output shaft which outputs a driving force to the side of driving wheels and a lock-up clutch which operates in response to a hydraulic pressure. A control element controls an engaging pressure of the lock-up clutch by way of the hydraulic pressure. Abstract: The one-way clutch mechanism of a torque converter which has a short axial dimension, and which neither produces a shock noise (an abnormal sound) nor suffers a power loss in the idle mode thereof. An outer race (30 in FIG. 1 ) is united with a stator (18), and supports the stator (18) so as to be axially movable and rotatable with respect to a stationary shaft (16). The outer race (30) includes a first side face (32) which is formed with first teeth. An inner race (40) is united with the stationary shaft (16), and includes a second side face (42) opposite to the first side face (32). The second side face (42) is formed with second teeth which can prohibit the rotation of the outer race (30) in one direction, by meshing with the first teeth. The stator (18) and the outer race (30) receive the axial component force of a fluid stream which changes depending upon a speed ratio. Thus, the unitary structure (18, 30) comes near to or away from the inner race (40), thereby to engage or disengage the first teeth and the second teeth.

Abstract: A hydrokinetic torque converter has a rotary housing which is connectable to the crankshaft or camshaft of a combustion engine in a motor vehicle to drive the input shaft of the transmission. The housing confines a turbine, a pump, a stator (if necessary) and a lockup clutch between a radially extending wall of the housing and the turbine. A piston of the lockup clutch is movable in the axial direction of the housing and defines a first fluid-filled compartment with the turbine as well as a second fluid-filled compartment with the wall of the housing. The force which is required to engage, to partially disengage or to fully disengage the lockup clutch is reduced by the provision of one or more profiles on the piston and/or on a friction disc of the lockup clutch which extends or extend into the adjacent compartment or compartments to influence the speed of circulation of fluids in the respective compartments and/or the fluid pressures acting upon opposite sides of the piston. This enables a control unit to predictably and reliably change the condition of the lockup clutch (from engaged to partially engaged (slipping) to fully disengaged or in the opposite direction) in response to relatively small changes of fluid pressure in the first or in the second compartment.
